I always hear people talk about Widgets. Maybe I am just an idiot, but I have always wondered what they are. I was to afraid to ask in my college marketing classes. :-)

Amongst other things, it's a device used in cans of beer (especially bitter and stout) to give it a "draught/draft" quality rather than the standard fizzy-canned-beer effect. See here.

    Merriam-Webster defines it thus:

quote:
Main Entry: wid·get
    Pronunciation: 'wi-j&t
    Function: noun
    Etymology: alteration of gadget
    Date: 1926
    1 : GADGET
2 : an unnamed article considered for purposes of hypothetical example

It's a generic term for a nonexistant object, a bit like Acme is sometimes used for a nonexistent company (e.g. the Acme Widget Company). [Hey I managed two spellings of nonexistunt in the same sentence]

From www.m-w.com: "an unnamed article considered for purposes of hypothetical example"

It's that thing that none of us sell (because it doesn't exist), but we all use it in our examples when we're either trying to help someone or get a question answered... because sometimes you just need an example, but you don't want to tell the secrets of what you're really selling

Thats what I figured. I wasn't sure if there was some mechanical part called a widget or something. Man I feel like an idiot. :-)

Actually, they come in blue, red and green. Also, they're useful crutch when you're feeling inarticulate, and its not a four letter word.
