I've never been to one. Is it worthwhile?

It depends on what your goals are?
Some affiliates make it to ask for higher commission, some are seeking newer merchants, it's also a learning place to see what people are doing or what is going to be the next big thing.

I think Linkshare still hates me so I don't know about attendance, but I'll be up for getting together

    Hi Eric
Hi Eric -- I'll be there. I heard this is very different from the Summit. Look forward to seeing all affiliates and merchants in person again.

I heard the award cermenony is fun -- is this really a black tie/tuxedo event?

I'll be there on the 18th -- signed up for that merchant training -- has anyone taken it? Is it helpful?

I would love to come to a pre/post get together and meet some new peeps!

The Golden Links ceremony is by far the most formal affiliate event anywhere. I'm not much into black tie type stuff (I didn't wear a tie to my own wedding), but it is nice. What's impressive to me is that they videotape it and produce about a 5 minute clip of highlights to play the next morning at the Symposium.

Wrong image. Picture black Wranglers, a white dress shirt, and cowboy boots.

Well, the last time I said I'd be at a NYC meet, you made monetary bets with people that I'd rescind -- so I don't know if I should even attempt to say that I'd like to meet anyone in NYC.

No commitment from anybody at Linkshare yet but I am hopeful
Got verbal commitments from a few other merchants.

Any suggestion on the place and date?

I'm not doing the symposium but since I'm in NY a get together sounds great. I have to double check my schedule.

What do you think about them charging a fee now? did the attendance drop last year when they started charging (I didn't go)? As far as I'm concerned, I'm a customer of LinkShare, and why should I have to pay as a customer?

If attendance was down last year, it was only minimal. It's still quite packed for the venue. I believe it's free for LinkShare merchants and perspective merchants, and that it's only affiliates who have to pay. Seems backwards to me.

so does that mean they want to recapture some of the commissions they pay out? or is it just symptomatic of the attitude they have towards affiliates.

You seem to have an inside track - do they treat you better when you've got real contacts inside the ivory tower? I'm not sure I'll have patience with them to wait that long.

I think they're just trying to pay for an expensive event, and they don't feel they can get away with charging their paying customers (the merchants). The fee for the Symposium isn't unreasonable. I doubt that they make a (direct) profit on the Symposium. (Indirectly, I have no doubt that the increased relationships benefit all parties.)

Having a good account manager does make a big difference in any network.

I think Linkshare's invitation-only event at an event they are charging affiliates to attend further proves my theory that they don't care about anything but their own sense of "better than everyone else".
This was very evident by the recent actions of one of their affiliate managers that went completely unchecked. They have no sense of accountability in their organization.
You guys have fun. When I fly to NY again it will be to see people who are friendly, not rude and lazy.

What did I miss - affiliate managers going unchecked? Sorry - still somewhat a newbie I guess.

I really find it offensive to charge for a company sponsored event... this isn't internet retailer or something like that where you get independent advice... this is all to better their earnings, which they can't do without us.

The deadline for early bird is tomorrow, and when I checked the agenda earlier, there was nothing of substance to say it's worth my 400 bucks.
