    SoCal Fires
As you have probably all heard, it's been a really bad few days in SoCal for fires. First, Griffith Park, above Hollywood and west of downtown LA, threatening landmarks such as the Griffith Observatory, Greek Theater and Hollywood Sign, and then two days later, beautiful Catalina Island and the small cove city of Avalon. Avalon has a population of 4,000 and 3,000 people were evacuated off the island.

"Twenty- six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin' for me
Santa Catalina, the island of romance, romance, romance, romance"

    -the Four Preps

Fabulous efforts by hundreds of firefights (who hade to be brought to Catalina by boat and helicopter) have prevented any deaths and kept property damage to a minimum.

Fire season here has started early, and coming off the worst drought year ever recorded here (total 4 inches of rain), who knows what will happen....

It looks like it's gonna be a bad year for fires. I'm glad I don't live in the hills anymore. When I did I always worried about fires but none ever came very close. Well, a small one did once but they put it out out before it grew.

I saw a lot of smoke in the sky from the Griffith Park fire, even from 30+ miles away. Several ABWers live quite close to the fire, I think.

I grew up within walking distance of the Griffith Observatory and the Greek Theater.

Was a "tree person" during my high school years.

Very sad to watch on TV.

I bet it's scary being so close to the fires.

My daughter has several close friends that are Islanders (Catalina). This is terrible to watch from so close yet, it is so far away to be able to do anything. But....prayer does seem to be working.
