Anyone up for a ABW Presidential Poll?
I am uber curious as to what the ABW crowd thinks of the 2008 race and think an anonymous poll would be kind of cool.

Of course, I can sense some comments along the way

Anyone up for me setting up a poll? Just curious if anyone sees a problem with it?

I think there's nobody running on either side that I'd like to see as president, but next year I'll do my civic duty, hold my nose, and vote for one of them. I'm not sure which yet.

Would you include only announced candidates? There are a lot of possibilities out there who are not yet running, but who might well eventually be in the race.

Bottom line: I'm always up for such a poll, but it is probably too early in the race.

    Sure let's have a poll!

Will be interesting to see how the ABW poll compares to the eventual outcome.

Hey, I kinda like the idea. I'd be willing to participate.

BUT -- Seems to me there was a lot of fuss over politics a couple of years ago and Haiko may have established some sort of policy regarding where/when/how we can approach politics and "current events" stuff.

I'm not at all sure about that, so please don't base your decision on my comments. But you might want to check around more, ask specifically one of the mods and/or Haiko about a presidential poll -- what forum, what sort of timing, etc.

I hope it is all in good fun.

I am always curious about some of the lower tier candidates...

Mike Gravel, Ron Paul, Mike Huckabee...guys like that are fun to watch in the debates.

I think there's no way it could possibly stay non-political, and since everyone here *should* be a Democrat, what would be the point of even discussing it?

As far as which Democrat should get the nomination, that's an easy one. Whichever one would be most likely to beat whoever their Republican opponent is should be the one nominated.

    Easy peasy, what's to discuss?

    Only in an ideal world.

Unfortunately, that might not be the case for this election. It certainly was not what happened in 2004

I'm not sure what my plans are for 2008 yet Matt, so I'd still have to pass. Right now, we're just out there talking to voters all over this great country, listening to what's important to them (this week). Getting a "feel" - if you will, for the pulse of the electorate, and (of course) deciding which state to become a resident of at the 11th hour should we decide to proceed...

We've a long way to go before we formulate a decision. Hopefully my "Catch & Release" platform will get wheels and overtake global warming, Iraq, healthcare, education and mid east policy as the trigger that turns the electorate my way. Stand by........

I'm voting for Alan! I'm a strong believer in a strict Catch & Release policy. It helps that I don't like eating fish all that much. I attribute that to dad's beer batter fish experiment when I was 6.

There are countries in which everyone follows one platform, and that doesn't work so well; at least not by our standards. Single party righteousness is the very foundation of tyrany, dictatorship, socialism, communism. Perhaps our most precious resource is the counter-balance of thought and the freedom to choose in open elections.

While I detest the personal attacks that many individuals and special interest movements launch against others for their political beliefs, and the emotional anger driven condemnation of others whose thoughts may not align with our own, I thoroughly enjoy intelligent discussion on different sides of issues. All sides of thought should be welcomed in discussion, and from those discussions personal decisions are made, and we each get to actually VOTE for what we believe is in line with our personal platforms. I may totally oppose anothers view on a given issue, but I do not attack that individual person or demean their intellect or good will because we do not agree.

I feel so deeply fortunate that we have a multiple party system with different platforms, and I am tremendously thankful that we do not have one party or belief system in power infinitum.

I've said all along that the current administration has left things in such a state that the Democrats ought to be able to win the White House with a trained monkey -- BUT THEY WON'T, because they always find a way to shoot themselves in the foot. Generallly, I think only three things could lose it for the Dems:

    1. Generating early bickering and fighting among themselves.
    2. Nominating Hillary Clinton.
    3. Nominating Barack Obama.

But, hey, maybe it's just me. Or, maybe they are focusing obsessively already on doing, uh, er, ALL THREE.

    Darn.

(The above remarks are made in a spirit of fun. They're true, but they're offered in a spirit of good fun.)

What does it matter anyway? They are all crooks. They want to redistribute wealth in exchange for votes.

    >> What does it matter anyway?

I'm sick of the TWO party system, too! But that's all I have to say about that.

I hope this thread doesn't get closed down as political. As long as there aren't too many started I think it's cool to read people's opinions. Much better then seeing threads about Paris Hilton going to jail IMO..

As long as it doesn't get argumentative, I think something this general is fine here in the Virtual Family forum. Haiko has the final authority, but the fact that he's let it stay implies that it doesn't cross the line.

I think some of the comments in the jury nullification and wild boar threads come much closer to crossing the line. Haiko and the moderators here tend to give people a fair bit of leeway as long as it's not disruptive or poorly intentioned.
