I am flying Salt Lake City to Denver to pick up my daughter to Orlando for the night to visit my sister then Ft. Lauderdale. Cutting out the Orlando leg on the return but my sister is a travel agent and recommended Southwest to Ft. Lauderdale as Miami is a zoo. She said the hour trip from Ft. Lauderdale would take less time than a cab from Miami.

Hmmmmm....this just about looks too good to pass up.

From what I hear, Chuck is right. Ft Lauderdale Airport is about the same as Miami as far as time of drive. Cheap flight, less crowded airport...yeah I'm glad I forgot to book our flights 2 months ago!

How does one get from the train drop off point to the hotel? Cab or other and how far from the convention hotel? Anyone know?

You could take the Metrorail from FLL to Government Center Station and take the Metromover (free) from there to Bayfront Park Station.
    http://www.miamidade.gov/transit/moverstations.asp

That'll get you 1/2 mile from the hotel entrance...you could probably walk the rest of the way.
    http://www.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en...01133&t=h&z=17
(Instead of taking the sidewalks, cross the street and take the scenic walk to the hotel through the park. )

Or you could just take a cab after you get off at the Government Center Station.

BTW, the seat sale ends May 31.

The hotel is probably 30 miles from the Ft Lauderdale airport. My guess is it is about a $60 cab ride.

My suggestion is, specially if you are new to Miami and do not know you're way around, do not take the train or metro mover no matter what time you arrive at either Ft Lauderdale or Miami Airport. It will be better and faster if you take a cab/taxi direct to the hotel or to your destination. I am not sure of actual fare rates but from Ft Lauderdale it's probably around $60.00 and from Miami perhaps around $40.00.

My phone below is available if anyone gets lost or needs help call me any time.
It might be expensive for some, but well worth it and possibly avoid headaches later.

I agree, and specially if you're carrying any luggage or laptop.

Depending on the hour (trafic-wise), from Ft Lauderdale airport, to the Intercontinental Hotel in downtown Miami, it takes from 40 minutes to 1hr, and it cost about $70.00, - from Miami, airport to the Intercontinental Hotel in downtown Miami, it takes about 20 minutes, and it cost less than $30.00

The point was that with delays and the time it takes to get your baggage and transportation to the hotel it will be a was if you fly into F.L.

Some interesting tips here. Wish I had known about the train from Ft Lauderdale before I booked to the Miami airport. May have been cheaper.

Anyway, what's the cheapest way to get from the Miami airport to the hotel? I'd like to shoot for under $10-$15 if possible. I'll be flying in to Miami around 5:40 on Friday so if anybody else comes in around that time maybe we can share a cab?

if anyone else is arriving around the same time, you could always split the cab or find a merchant who can expense it and carpool to the hotel together.

Should have read snib's first. I land around 4:50 in Miami so I'm game.

I'm surprised to hear that Miami would be a zoo in July. That's their lowest travel month of the year.

MIA is the largest gateway to Central/South America and the Caribbean. Most people who travel through that airport are not originating or ending in Miami.

Check with some of the airport shuttle services to see if any go from FLL to that hotel. Like Prime Time Shuttle, Smart Shuttle, etc. That's usually the cheapest way.

Also, some hotels provide shuttle service, so can't hurt to check directly with them. If they don't, they may be able to recommend.

I called the hotel today to see what means of transportation they suggested from the Miami airport and they told me that a taxi is only $20-$25, so not as bad as earlier reported.

If you like being on a shuttle all day. Personally, I would rather walk, lol! The taxi ride at $25 is probably your best bet.

From MIA, not FLL where a taxi is significantly higher, as indicated in earlier posts.

I'm so glad that I found this thread! My Marketing Specialist lives in Tampa and we were going to drive over. But she convinced me today that we should fly instead. I found much better rates and times into FLL. As soon as I can get in touch with her, I think we will book.

If anyone is flying in early Saturday evening to FLL or flying back out Tuesday evening and wants to share a cab with us, let me know. It looks like shuttles are maybe about $30 a person and the cab is $70. For two of us, the cab makes more sense. But I'm sure we could use a third if anyone is so inclined.

    Tricia

Edit: I actually just found a shuttle service from the Soutwest Airlines site. Does anyone know anything about Tri-County Airport Express? They have our hotel listed for $20 a person each way. They say that the wait is "no more than 30 minutes" from the time that you check in until the time that you board.

Flying in Friday night at midnight into FLL to save on airfare and staying at an airport hotel. I talked to the connoisseur at the hotel and he said $80 for a cab, $25-30 for a shuttle (per person). We are taking the trains as we have all day and want to see the city. It is a meticulous course as there are two trains and a people mover but you end up across the street from the hotel.

    The hotels site...
    http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/ic/...transportation

    Says...

    Transportation to and from Hotel
    Miami International Airport (MIA)
Distance: 10 MI / 16.09 KM East to Hotel
Taxi Charge (one way): $20.00 (USD)
    Time by taxi: 15 minutes

    Fort Lauderdale International (FLL)
Distance: 25 MI / 40.23 KM South to Hotel
Taxi Charge (one way): $70.00 (USD)

Here's an FLL shuttle that goes to many areas right around the hotel for reasonable rates, if you have more than one person. They might be worth a call to ask if they can run to the Intercontinental Hotel.
