Anyone use Zeus or Arelis? Any comments? Any others that are worth considering.

Andy,

Do some good research on Zeus.

Several months ago there was an incredible amount of talk (that rivaled google dance threads in length) about this on webmasterworld about how Google allegedly penalized sites that used this tool.

If I recall, the gist was that their pages typically named 'themeindex.htm' were automatically given PR0.

The feedback from Zeus and I think even googleguy was that no such penalization was occurring, but that these tools certainly can be abused and therefore result in penalties. The evidence that people found, however, was certainly convincing.

I've been out of the loop on this one for months now so there may be some more recent info.

Thanks for the info Scott.
I read today in a newsletter that Google had ok'd Zeus link pages as long as they were tightly themed.

Is Arelis any better or does it suffer the same "penalties"? The reason I was more interested in Zeus was purely cost. Works out cheaper for the number of sites I have and would want to use it on.

I use Zeus.

It's a useful research tool - whether or not you actually build link pages/sites with it. If you do, I can't see how/why anyone should know it has anything to do with Zeus (just realised - there was/is a free version. Guess it had no customisation features and it's those sites that tripped the alarms.)

As with anything, the more you put into it, the more you get out of it.

Can't comment on relative merits as haven't used naything comparable.

I think I've found a very good program. If you send me $100, then I can buy it and test it for you

Seriously, it's difficult to recommend/not recommend something I haven't used personally, but I've heard nothing but warnings about both Zeus or Arelis.

Well I have just bought Arelis so will give feedback in a couple of months. I don't see how search engines can penalise sites who use these tools as you can create templates for your link directory that look like normal pages with lots of informative text and a bunch of links that just happen to be gathered and organised by Arelis. It will mean doing more editing of link lists, but this is not a hassle and something I would want to do anyway.

From my trials so far I reckon that used properly, this is a valuable tool.

Regardless of what Googleguy may claim, Zeus created pages result in a PR0 for those pages (not for the rest of the site necessarily).

Any tool that can be used to manipulate PageRank (and that includes Arelis) is closely monitored by Google, but it isn't the tools themselves that cause the penalty, it is how they are used.

Personally, I would advise against using them to create instant link pages. I would also say that the emphasis on links as the way to high ranks is overstated considerably.

However, I have used both Zeus and Arelis for their spidering capabilities as they are a hell of a lot quicker than constant manual searches when looking for potential link partners. I've never used their create a link page capabilities or their email templates. I want to see the sites I am approaching for a link before I send an email.

If you are looking for a quick way to a high PR and good link popularity, then tough. Though you might want to take a look at www.linkleads.com as a genuine link exchange network.
