What's wrong with recommending good links?
    Hi,

I'm new to the forum culture. I read the rules and was really surprised at the strong views against promoting / recommending products with affiliate links. Why do you have that opinion? What is the danger? When you have a commnity that is involved in affiliate marketing doesn't it make sense that they do affiliate marketing wherever they meet people?

    I don't understand, so I thought I would ask.

    Neeraj.

We're here as a community to HELP each other - not SELL to each other

An affiliate link means you want to PROFIT from the community members

It's also, by extension, an "advertisement" - which is something you have to pay for

That simply invites drive by marketers who only want to spam the board & move on.

What value does that add to the board?

There is absolutely no justifiable excuse for you to promote your affiliate links to other affiliates nor, for that matter, on my dime. If you want to talk about a site, fine do so with out the affiliate link, if you want to promote something, buy an ad.

Try drinking that tea with a little creme de menthe in it. It won't matter whether you ARE better but you will definitely FEEL better.

Besides all the good reasons mentioned above, in the long run, it will help you.

When I first came here, I did not take that seriously until I saw people ripping off other affiliate's website/ideas. It is usually lurkers that patrol this site and take off with the affiliate ideas/site template.

Back to the topic at hand,

There is absolutely no justifiable excuse for you to promote your affiliate links to other affiliates nor, for that matter, on my dime. If you want to talk about a site, fine do so with out the affiliate link, if you want to promote something, buy an ad.
It's horrendously annoying and offensive to be "promoted to" in forums, even when it's subtle.

That said, it's the FUNCTION of affiliate managers to promote their programs to affiliates, and done all well and proper and paid for, it's a huge help for finding good programs that are well managed. That does not imply that just because it's properly promoted by a good AM that it's suitable, because that isn't always the case. But it's appropriate.

Dropping affiliate links is trying to sell people stuff; no thank you but it's forum spam, which is nauseating.

And of course, what makes you think we are interested in your affiliate links? Smart affiliates don't market to anyone and everyone, they target the people they think would be interested. Chances are, this crowd won't be.

So, here's what I learned: Forums are a place where friends hang out and help each other. This is why it is offensive to be promoting things in a disguised way. Advertising is o.k. in the right place on the forum because people are expecting the ad. Advertising something while pretending to be a friend is not a nice thing to do to your friend.

    Is that about right?
