Did anyone read this Ari Kaufman article?
So many things swirled through my head as I read this - and they all ended up with one major image Big Brother is at the door

Am I just overreacting cause I haven't finished my first pot of coffee?

Let's scramble their freaking brains by loading up with cookies we wouldn't normally get. Like I could start getting cookies for maternity clothes, luxury cars and divorce lawyers.

    It could be big fun.

Pretty interesting read as you get into the next few pages, but I think Big Brother is already watching, and his name is Google.

MSN started with their Passport and Yahoo has something similar, but Google has taken it well beyond all the others combined. I recently saw a new link on Google when logged into one of my "Google Accounts". The link was to view my search history. I clicked the info link and saw something to the effect of "...using actual search queries and information from the Google Toolbar we are better able to target search results and advertising to your preferences."

    That got me thinking.

One Google account can include Adwords, Adsense, Webmaster Tools, Blogger, Google Checkout, Toolbar data, search data, Analytics (and conversion data, often down to product sold), probably Froogle, and on and on and on. Google also is reputed to have the largest whois database on the planet. Plus they own traffic worldwide.

Google already has the ubercookie beat hands down. They know where people are going (search and toolbar), what they're buying (Google Checkout), what those sales are worth to advertisers (Adwords and Analytics), whose traffic converts (Adsense and Analytics), etc.

Google is starting to scare me a little...

Anyway, just something to think about. Thanks for the post.

As I write this the CNN poll - are you worried about the information companies compile about you from your Web surfing habits?

14519 total votes of which 73% (10549) said yes
