    Addt'l Gig Yields Happy Chris
I've been working on a piece for awhile now. And it was getting bad enough that tabbing between one of my 10+ applications was reason enough to go to the store and get some shopping done. Newegg was running a great special on some Corsair memory, so I picked up a gig stick for my laptop for all of $40.

Let me tell you, an additional gig goes quite a way towards improving one's performance (is the sun shining brighter today?...). Sometimes now I tab between two heavy hitting apps just because I can...

I recently bought a new tv, and then I thought to myself, "why am I still working on 512?"

I'll tell you, performance for the buck comes in getting as much ram stuck in your machine as it will take!

I maxed my machine out a while back, it is true the best bang for the buck in performance in RAM, but once you have had it for a while it'll feel slow again and you'll want more.. but the machine won't be able to use any more and you'll have to get a new machine and it will be really fast, until you get used to it and you'll go buy RAM and the cycle of computing goes on...

    Congrats on the speed.

I've already got my eye on these new pieces that expand to 4 gigs. As long as you're not running Vista, that should be enough to run just about every application you have simultaneously.

I know what you mean. RAM is one of the best upgrades you can make on a computer. I've got my web server maxed out at 4gb and it just flies. I love it!

Yep. RAM is worth the money. My desktop has 3 gb and 1 on the laptop.

Agreed. I have my eye on a new laptop and will have to decide between 2GB and 4GB. Will get the 4GB if I can swing it.

My new philosophy, for this week anyway, is who cares about hard drive speed if everything is loaded into memory...

The next time I'm out shopping, I think I'll definitely spring for a computer that's expandable to four. I probably won't get four coming out of the gate (I have to pretend to give something up when I make purchases like this to keep the wife happy), but it will be a comfort to know that when 2gb chips go on a quick sale, that I'll have a machine that can benefit from them.

Totally agree! RAM is the cheapest, most effective upgrade you can make to almost any computer.
