Looking for good keyword management tool
I'm looking for a tool that will allow me to segment lists of keywords. Right now, I have to manually go through the keywords (I use WordTracker) and try to discern patterns in them in order to group the keywords.

Any suggestions for a tool that can do this automatically?

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking.

I use Excel as a primary tool for generating keyword lists, and grouping them.

For example, I might start with a list such as

    widget
    fromitz
    glinckle

and I'd use a series of spreadsheet functions to expand this into a list like
    widget
    widget fromitz
    widget glinckle
    glinckle fromitz
    buy widget
    widget sale
    discount widget
    blue widget
    widget repair
    etc

I also use the Excel "search function" (not searching in excel, but using the =SEARCH("substring","string") function to find which cells contain a specific string) to identify and group my keywords appropriately.

I'd love to find a better tool, but after evaluating many keyword-generator and bid-management tools, I've not yet found one that's worth using.

Like Mark, I use spreadsheets. I develop a matrix of words based on concepts. I mine for negatives and non-sensical matrix results. I mine logs files and referral files for keywords, their variations, concepts, combinations and negative concpets as well. I use SAS's trace referral tool to get more ideas of who is clicking on my ad and NOT buying. I use rhymezone for ideas on synonyms as I build my matrix words / concepts. I use a free mixer, and it's stemming tools often. I use Google's tool as well. I use word tracker for larger projects. Sometimes, G's trend tool helps me makes decisions about which ways to lean with ad text and pluralization, as well as geo location. I do live searches and read title tags and see what other words people are targeting. I use MSN's adlabs, it's tools are interesting and free and they stir my creative juices at times. I use several other tools also, some that I've built and some that others have built for me. But mostly, I use my brain.

    Synonyms/Word Ideas = http://www.rhymezone.com
    Matrix Mixer = http://www.related-pages.com/adWordsKeywords.aspx
    G Keyword Tool = https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
    G Trends = http://www.google.com/trends
    MSN adlab = http://adlab.microsoft.com

The conceptualization of Ad Groups can't be fully automated, in my opinion. Likely, it can't be partly automated well either. I use tools to make my work faster and to remove repetitive tasks (or to automate them), but overall, it's the thinking you've got to do.

Great tips guys. This is why I have been reading this forum for so long.

I also use the old Overture search term tool. I have a link to it on my website, but I don't want to post it here so I do not break the rules.

I agree that the grouping of conceptually-similar words can't be automated (with any accuracy, anyway). I've seen various kinds of "content analysis" software used in qualitative research, but I don't think it's applicable here.

    Thanks for the guidance!
