Cool Pride cometh before a fall...
I've been home all week with bruised ribs after a fall on my Sunday morning bicycle ride. I usually ride about 45 - 50 miles every Sunday morning before church with a couple riding buddies, and this weekend was one of the best rides in my life. I had strength, I had wind, and I was able to keep up with the best rider for almost the entire ride.

Feeling a little cocky towards the end of the ride, I was getting a little sloppy in the saddle while waiting for a trailing rider to catch up... doing circles in the middle of the road. All of a sudden I realized I was turning too sharply and the bike was at the wrong angle. I slammed into the ground with my bike still clipped onto my shoes.

X-rays came back negative yesterday for any broken/fractured ribs, but I have some bruised bones and get a sharp pain on every breath. So I'm home all doped up on Vicodine for the pain, and will be off work the rest of the week.

On the positive side it's giving me more time to catch up on ABW topics and spend a little more time on the forum. I can sit up for an hour or so at a time before needing to lie down and rest, so you'll probably be hearing more from me this week than usual. Hope you don't mind too much

    Thanks Carolyn,

I'm hoping to be able to ride again in 2 weeks, at least for a light one.

I was hoping to go for a birthday ride this weekend (turning 39), but that's out of the question. We're still shooting for the Fire and Ice ride in mid-July, which is 100 mile trip over Mt Hood and out to Hood River... but we'll see how I feel as that date gets closer.

I usually ride into work a couple times a week as well (10 miles each way). It's a great way to keep the love handles at bay, and helps a lot with rising gas prices.

    Do you ride?

Used to...did the AIDS Ride a few years ago, which was Minneapolis to Chicago in 6 days, that was an incredible experience! I still love my bike, though it's not getting as much use as my running shoes these days. I'm really glad you didn't break anything, and happy bday in advance!

It's god to see you active again even though the reason sucks.

Several years ago I rode BAMMI (Bicycle Across the Magnificent Miles of Illinois) which is a 4 day 420 mile ride. It rained for all 4 days which led to several accidents (look Ma no breaks) and I spent the next 10 days in the hospital with 6 fractured ribs and pneumonia brought on by the fractures. Man, that was a vacation to remember.

That sounds like a nasty wreck. I did some biking myself this last weekend and one of the guys I was with injured his ribs too. Here's to a quick recovery.

Thankfully nothing was broken and you will be back on the bike soon. That sounds like a painful way to wait on the slowpokes. Wishing you a very speedy recovery!

And WTG on the terrific way to keep in shape.

    Thanks for the encouragement everyone.

Yes, Judi - it's been great. I've lost 16 pounds since I started riding in October of last year, and dropped 35 points of cholestrol. When I ride you can see me grinning ear to ear the whole way

btw, my work just called and they're sending someone over with my office computer so that I can work from home. Heck, if I can blog and post on forums, I might as well get some work done instead of blowing through all my sick leave!

    hope you feel better..

40-50 miles / day.. HATS OFF TO YOU.

I did like a 20 mile some time ago on a road bike and it was tough. Eventhought it was a once in a blue moon bike ride for me, what you are doing is amazing

Thanks Eric. Sorry if I led you to believe I did that every day - it's only on Sunday mornings that I do 50 miles. During the week I usually only do a couple days with 20 to 30 miles (10 miles into work, and then I take a longer route back home).

If I'm lucky and have earned enough riding points with my wife, then I might get out for another 30 mile evening ride... but it's going to be a couple weeks before I do that again.

Now, where's that bottle of Percocet???

For a moment there, I thought you were on a motorcycle as opposed to a pedal bike and took a fall.

    Thumbs up
My ribs have healed up and I was able to stop taking pain pills a couple days ago. I even ran outside yesterday morning to flag down the garbage man in my jammies (I had forgotten to put my bins out, but fortunately he was willing to wait for me to roll them out).

Dang, no more working from home next week. It gave me a good taste of it though, and "Ricky LIKED It"

Now if I could just continue to build my affiliate business, I might be able to work from home all the time... though at this rate that'll be another year or so down the road. It will definitely be worth all the hard work!

Glad you're feeling better. At least there's a holiday in the middle of next week to break things up.
