Question Speak more than one language?
Thought it might be interesting to have EVERYONE put down what languages they know!
Put your Native language first and then the other languages you know in order of highest proficiency.

    1. English
    2. Japanese (lived there for 2 years)
    3. Some Portugese (my brother taught me)

    1. English

    2. Spanish - 1 year in high school, plus self-study and osmosis - not fluent, not proficient, but I can read our local Spanish-language billboards and when I was teaching English full-time in an urban school, I recognized the curse words. If someone on the street shouted at me in Spanish to warn me that I was about to be hit by an oncoming bus, I'm not confident that I would survive. (In my step-daughter's elementary school here in Hayward, California, nearly 50% of parents spoke only Spanish, which made PTA meetings somewhat difficult.)

    3. French - 2 years in high school (30 years ago). While I was in Paris in 2001, I was surprised that I could read many of the French-only placards in some art museums, but I was unable to effectively communicate in French with waiters or hotel staff.

    4. German - 2 years in college (25 years ago), almost none retained.

When I visited London and Paris in 2001, I discovered that most of the "service industry" people that I interacted with in hotels, restaurants, etc. did not speak English or French as their first language -- for most, it seemed that English was their third, fourth, or fifth language, and yet they all spoke English far better than I speak any language other than English.

Spanish - lived in northern Chile for a couple of years.

I used to be more fluent in Spanish than in English, but it's been awhile since I've been immersed in the language. Sadly, I find myself having to ask native speakers to slow down so my ear can pick out the words.

    I speak:
    1. English
    2. Portuguese
    3. Spanish

I spent two years in Brasil and the people are very fun loving and their language has a ton of idioms and spunky phrases that are super fun to use.

Speaking Portuguese to me is much more fun than English for me.
