Was I Deceived - or Am I Stupid??
Got an email from the MGM affiliate Manager:

Struggling to get more traffic & more sales for your business?

For a limited time, Jim Kukral, one of the industryís pioneers in online marketing, is offering the chance to get a free keyword report that will tell you what your customers are searching for regarding your business. Youíll find out information like how many people search for your business terms and how much your company can profit from optimizing for those terms.

Itís a really valuable tool and free! The only "catch" is that you'll need to schedule about half an hour on the phone to discuss your business and prepare a list of initial keywords and phrases people might use when conducting research on your products or services.

Visit http: // www. jimkukral.com/search_engine_marketing/ for more information.
So I go to the page, and it says:

Haven't hired a search engine firm yet?
Here's 5 things that will happen if you don't get
going with search before it's too late...
    1. Your competition will leave you behind.
    2. Your website will never get found as well as it could.
    3. You'll never go from good to GREAT!
    4. You will lose long-term because no one will be able to find you.
    5. Google will ignore you.

Don't want that to happen? The first step is a free report away.

Simply fill out this secure, private form and Iíll help you begin to understand how search works, and why your business MUST do it.

Not sure? Call me at 1-888xxxxxxx

    [GENERATE REPORT]

I value your privacy and will never sell or share your data.
I didn't bold the privacy statement. It's like that on the form!

    So what do I get?

    Hi Billy,

Thank you for recently contacting Fathom SEO. I am a Business
Development Consultant with the company and am happy to answer any
    questions you might have.

For your review, I have attached Fathom SEO's SERV and DRIVE Programs.
These documents detail Fathom SEO's process and pricing for Search
Engine Optimization and Link Popularity Building/Online PR,
respectively. I will also be sending some of Fathom SEO's customer
testimonials. It's a rather large file, and I didn't want to overwhelm
    your email server!

Please review and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, how
does your schedule look this week to discuss SEM endeavors at your
    company?

Please let me know and I look forward to hearing back from you.

    Regards,
    Brad

There's no free keyword analysis - just an attachment (don't know how to copy a pdf file) that says Fathom charges ... ya ready?....

    $22,600!!!!!

On the off chance it was a spam email that arrived at the same time I filled in the form, I replied wifh "Where's you get my info?"

I have a form on my site that you can fill out to get a bridge and some water-front property. I promise not to share the information you provide, unless I can make some money from it.

Something tells me that Jim would not be happy with this. Use his name to offer you an analysis and get nothing but a proposal and who knows who else got your information.

Not just his name... They used his WEB SITE! (That's where the form is.)

P.S. You left a link in there, Billy, so I unlinked it for you. I'm sure you didn't want to give them a backlink.

What's the name and email address of the first email you received? I don't understand why the MGM affiliate manager would be sending something like this. I am an MGM Mirage affiliate and I didn't get it.

I got your PM which included only a link:

    http:// mgmmirage.com/offers/2007/an_june_8/tip.html

There is no reason why this can't be posted as I did just confirm that it was included in the June 8 email that went to all MGM Mirage affiliates. I wonder if Jim Kukral paid for an ad in the affiliate newsletter. Whether or not he did, I think it's inappropriate. It's not affiliate newsletter material.

I have people at my house for dinner and fireworks, so I'll reply in depth to this all later tonight.

But I'm not understanding the issue? I am a former owner of Fathomseo, and I now consult for them and drive leads for them. If you fill out the form on my blog you get a Fathom salesperson who contacts you to help you get a free keyword report.

Michelle asked me if she could send my link out to her affiliates and I said sure. I am going to guess she thought the free report would help people if they wanted to sign up for it?

Nothing to see here... lead gen/affiliate marketing in motion.

Your site clearly says "I value your privacy and will never sell or share your data" yet you are now saying that you are driving leads to Fathomseo.

Why would the MGM Mirage affiliate manager be driving leads to an unrelated SEO in an official MGM Mirage communication? Since you say you consult with Fathomseo, is it correct to assume that you have a financial relationship with them?

Not sure what you're not getting. I am compensated by Fathom as an employee and former owner of the company. I drive leads to them. No data is ever going to a third party, it's not shared. It goes to my company. I'm driving leads for myself.

As for MGM, I'm not sure why she sent that email, as I said above, perhaps she thought the report would help some of her affiliates. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Again, there's nothing fishy going on here.

"If you fill out the form on my blog you get a Fathom salesperson who contacts you to help you get a free keyword report."

Now just looking at that page, you should make some mention of that on the page somewhere.

    You have:
"Simply fill out this secure, private form and Iíll help you begin to understand how search works, and why your business MUST do it."

It says "I'll" I'll needs to be defined. People are going to assume I'll = Jim since it's on jimkukral.com and there is video of you talking about it.

    Because this:

"I value your privacy and will never sell or share your data."

Is not the case if that info is going to Fathom SEO.

Jim, you're waaayyy off base here. The advertisement, referral or whatever you want to call it that MGM Mirage sent to their affiliates gives absolutely no indication that providing your personal data will be sent to Fathomseo for marketing purposes in the hopes of signing up a new customer, nor does your own website indicate that it will. In fact, your own website clearly indicates just the opposite by saying you don't sell or share your visitors' data.

I don't understand why MGM Mirage would be doing this unless they are also receiving some sort of compensation for doing so. It has absolutely nothing to do with the MGM Mirage affiliate program.

I would urge you to remove what amounts to a privacy statement on your website. Not only that, you should indicate that by completing the form, your visitor understands that you are generating leads for which you have a financial relationship with the company who benefits from those leads.

Jim made the following two statements in this thread.

"I am a former owner of Fathomseo, and I now consult for them and drive leads for them."

"I am compensated by Fathom as an employee and former owner of the company."

On 6/29, you made the following statement at jimkukral.com:

"I am a partner with a top 20 USA search firm who let me offer free traffic and keyword reports."

Partner, consultant, employee...those are three distinctly different relationships. A partner takes a distribution from company profits. A consultant earns a fee based on hours, project, etc. An employee earns a salary.

Jim, if you want to project credibility, I think you have some work to do.

Mack, read the first quote in the first post above which came from MGM Mirage, one of the largest hotel/casino operators in the U.S. Why shouldn't he expect to get something worthwhile for free? Is it common for affiliate newsletters to promote offers unrelated to their core business that ultimately end up being nothing more than a cloaked marketing effort and not even providing what was advertised in the initial response.

He responded to an offer that MGM Mirage recommended by offering a referral to Jim Kukral. In fact, the referral went to Fathom SEO in clear violation of the privacy statement on Kukral's website.

That doesn't make sense Jim. They never even mentioned the free keyword report.

Were they not told that people filling out the form are told they're getting a free keyword report?

Edited to add: Jim, you need to be much more clear on the form. I almost deleted it (and the large testimonial email they sent) because I thought it was spam. Read what they send. There was no mention of mgm or your site.

When I replied with "where the hec did you get my info from", to be honest, I wasn't even expecting a reply.

Mack: Like most, I don't fill out forms with my REAL info unless it's required (like at Linkshare), or on a trusted site. I thought the form was going to Jim. Reading the page source after the fact, it goes to neither Jim or Fathom. (Another reason I don't fill out forms unless necessary)
