My kitchen is extra sparkly today...
I have been spraying Clorox Cleanup on.... ANTS!!!! I've been here almost a year and haven't seen a single one of these critters and this morning I've been invaded.

What's your favorite home remedy for getting rid of ants? Pesticides in the kitchen are unacceptable. I've used red cayenne pepper spray in the past, headed to the grocery store shortly!

Absolutely 100% effective and safe to use in the kitchen: Boric Acid. It comes in a powder, so just spread it around and in a day, or less, the ants will be gone.

    I call the landlord

Deb, it's usually a 1-day thing. That rare rain we got forced them out of their underground homes, coupled with that rare humidity the rain bought, they're looking for a temp place to hang out.

Going forward (LOLOLOL), their homes should be dry tomorrow, and assuming you don't have crumbs all over the place, they should go home.

if you can find where they're coming in, put double sided tape around the hole. that will stick the lil' buggers right where they're at.

If you're into non-chemical natural methods, just put a few drops of lavender essential oil into a spray bottle of water. Mist where you find ants and they'll go away.

Save the red cayenne pepper spray for fending off Billy K Deb.

The boric acid powder works great. There is also a special Ortho "shaker" dry solution that is very effective.

Just make sure in either instance that pets don't have access to the room. Of course, a true earth person would simply share his/her residence with the ants as they are co-residents of the the earth. BillyK makes a point though too. After rains, they show up for a few days and then when it dries out they vanish. That happens here where I am as well.

    Dittos on the Boric Acid.

    Perhaps Cinnamon?

Make sure to focus on the places where they're able to get in. Windows, doors, baseboards, etc.

I see the spot they are coming in at, the double stick tape is a great idea. And I think I have some lavender essential oil. And there are no pets here... yet. (that'll be another post in a couple months....)

I wondered why all of a sudden they appeared Billy, back in NY they came in the spring not the end of July! Thanks for the explanation. Something to note on Loxly's Las Vegas, lol.

You really just can't kill ants. You have to have them take the lethal substance BACK to the nest so the root of the problem is destroyed.

Someone makes a clear ant gel killer ( we get it at home depot but not sure how many of those are sitting on the strip in Vegas). Anyway, it is like an adventure our house when we get ants, lol! The ants LOVE this gel. Minutes after you drop a blob onto the floor, the circle is PACKED with ants drinking from the edge.My kids lay on the floor and watch the action, lol! The ants send out some kind of signal to the other ants to let them know to chow down. After their fill, they go back to the nest where the poison in spread. Within a few days the entire nest dies ( I would say 4 - 6 days max).

Again, killing ants where they are will NOT work, the nest must be destroyed to eliminate the problem, so find this gel. If you can't find it LMK I will track it down online for you. OH don't call an exterminator either, they will use the same thing you can buy for $5 and charge you $150!

Yep, that's the Ortho product I was talking about. They take it back to the colony and "share" it with all their buddies. hehehe

Eeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwww ants! Reminds me our ant season is coming. I typically get ants in September. I'll wake up and find a trail of the little bast*rds from the terrace to the kitchen.

Lavender oil sounds like a plan. I also like the smell of Pinesol so might use that one, too. I've usually panicked and sprayed RAID all over the place.

The karmic implications of feeding unsuspecting little creatures poison to happily bring "home" to mass murder their babies makes me kinda sick. LOL

There are two kind of ants: sweet-seekers and protein seekers (they bite!) . A little sugar mixed with boric acid or a little bacon grease mixed with boric acid will kill them all 3-4 days tops. The small bottlecaps on 2-liter bottles are an ideal size to set out because they can be put in places where children and pets can't get at them.

I just sent Jesse to the leasing office with a burnt out refrigerater light bulb to get a new one...

He came back with the same bulb because they told him "We'll send a crew over to replace it"

    LOL

    I think I can replace a bulb

    back to Debbie's aunt buddies...

Oh... and wait for SCORPIAN SEASON! It's fun!!!!!

Discovery Channel: 10 Most Deadliest Things (or something similar)

    Boa Constricor - S America/no problem

    Pirannas - S America/No Prob

A Few more - none in America

    Then... Scorpians... SW Desert...

    At that EXACT moment...

out of the corner of my eye, something's crawling up living room wall

    Scorpian!!

All I own is a flyswatter - looked usless

Grabbed the fat Sunday Paper and swatted as hard as I could...

and ran to the leasing office

She said it's their season. Aargh!

The actual Discovery Channel stories were, someone rolled over in bed and the scorpian felt threatened and attacked - don't ask how many sleepless nights I had

and somone put on a pair of shoes, not knowing a scorpian was in one. I still wince every time I put on my shoes

Actually your Clorox spray is not a bad first defense. As ants travel to-and-from the food source to the nest they leave a "trail" with a chemical scent (pheromone) so the other ants can follow the same path. The Clorox wipes out that scent so they cannot all gang up on those toaster goodies...

Here in the northeast, we sometimes get them ganging up in the springtime/early summer - but haven't seen any in the last couple years.

    Good luck.

    no - lolol

but a couple months back we were at Red Rock (the caynon, not the casino) and I looked down and there was a HUGE yellow scorpian about 3 inches from my foot. No idea if they're fast or slow... but I ran back to the car in record time... never looking back

You have a point girlie, lol! We try to focus on how much they enjoy slurping the sweet goo and watch them walk proudly home with their full tiny little ant tummies.....

We miss them as they leave and try not to think about what happens next, I just focus on their happy little trail as we bid them farewell...

Usually they're coming from outside. If I can see where the ants are entering the house, I spray Raid across the path, in such a way that they can't just go around it. It doesn't kill the hill, but that's not the point. Any boneheads that cross over will die, which stops the "food found here" pheremone trails from being renewed. Once the trails fade, the others don't smell any big motivation to keep coming to that area. A respray will deter rescouting efforts.

If I can find the hill outside, I sprinkle generic Diazinon granules on it.

But for the most part, I just tough it out and wait for ant season to end. Diaz always works, but sometimes I can't find the hill or it's not on my land.

I've not had any luck with Borax, or the gel, or any kind of bait for that matter. MI ants must have more discerning tastes.

Don't do that, they'll just invade the next one.

All it takes to get ants out of a toaster is to run it (use the setting that'll burn bread). You may need to sacrifice a slice of bread to get the toaster to run long enough. They tend to shut off too quick if there's no bread in 'em.
    Presto--cooked ants!
Then just dump 'em out of the crumb tray.
    Repeat as needed.

Once we actually had a small hill's worth of fairly large black ants (biters) decide our RANGE would be a great spot to nest! I'd seen ants in the kitchen that year, but hadn't known where they were coming from. But they were getting really numerous and more aggressive than usual, so I traced some back to source. Imagine my surprise when I realized that the ants I was seeing weren't just walking over the range, but into it!

The ensuing spectacle that occured after I turned all 4 gas burners on high was somehow both extremely disturbing, and fascinating. They all tried to leave by going over the gas feeds, then OVER the flaming burners! Duh! Insta-death.

I figure with any heat-using solution like that, the thing is sterilized at the same time. So once the carcasses are removed, it's good to go

I use that Terro stuff, one drop on a piece of paper somewhere on the counter and they come and get the stuff and take it back to the nest. Next day they are all gone.
It isn't like spraying something, just a dab of clear stuff on a piece of paper.
