That's an insane amount. I would be curious to know the number of comupters with the MAC OS installed.

Ok after reading that article and the source I imagine they are not counting pirated or questionable installs. But? That number sounds way high. I wonder how many people really use a Windows machine with a bought copy every week?

You can almost discount some countries entirely. Not that I think its bad, and neither does MS they are just glad if people pirate that they are pirating their stuff.

Do old computers sitting on a shelf really count? When do they stop counting them, years? or by customer support?

I guess they count everything sold.
Windows 1.0. was released Nov 1985. I remember getting a pre-release for testing in 1984. I always had from to 3 to 6 PCs working at the same time for my private use. So it means I bought at least 60, may be 80 Windows upgrades these last 20 years. Must be much more with all the OEM pre-installed versions. Not a bad business.

Reminds me of when McDonald's used to keep an active count on the old signage and it strikes me that when they reached 1B served the odometer stopped.. now it just says "billlions and billions served"

And does this count computers that have been purchased by consumers and are used, or those that are sitting around in Best Buy, Circuit City, Overstock, etc, etc, etc, etc inventory without a home?

Also......how many unique consumers does that represent? For instance, in my lifetime I've probably had 15 machines with Windows installations. Does that count as 15 units?

On the Linux/Ubuntu I think that's a thought process (bringing that up) that I have to shake myself out of every day... thinking like a techie as opposed to thinking like the average shopper.

For every 1 user who's heard of ubuntu, there's 9,999,999 people who haven't and won't ever.

It's true with OS's, spyware, parasites, cookies and everything else in this industry. We know more than almost everyone.
