Removed because "alexa rating and google page rank is too low"
I received this email this morning, from a new SAS merchant (program launched July 13, currently $0.00 EPC):
This message is to inform you that you have been removed from the affiliate program of the merchant: [ company name omitted, to prevent help with PageRank ]

The reason given was: alexa rating and google page rank is too low
At first, I thought this was mere cluelessness, but then I realized that the merchant is simply admitting that the primary purpose of the affiliate program is to build PageRank, not to generate sales through affiliates.

The email was not sent to me using the SAS interface, but as a direct email.

"but then I realized that the merchant is simply admitting that the primary purpose of the affiliate program is to build PageRank"

How would they build PageRank thru SAS? So you were right with the cluelessness of the merchant.

I didn't say the merchant was doing anything successfully, but the motives are clearly articulated. As you note, SAS links aren't going to add any PageRank for the merchant -- but a mention on ABW might.

You don't have to link to them, you can just post their name.

Building PR with an network is quite impossible except for the Buy.com-CJ and Overstock-LS scenario

Well, at least that info cuts it down to two possibilities... And only one of them (the one with skin care products for men) has Auto Approval.

Actually, it appears that three merchants joined on July 13, and I'm not referring to "Matte for Men" nor "CC Berries."

Were they auto-approve early on and switched later?

Okay, playing devil's advocate for a second, there is the remote possibility thet they think they're using Alexa and PR to determine site quality, but that goes back to clueless...

Well Mark, it goes to show that you've been barking up the wrong tree. While you've been busy making money, clearly you've not focussed on the tried and true measure of success. Alexa rank. Followed closely by PageRank. I can think of a few high profile affiliates here that have Gray Bars (and at least one that's been behind them), and still have more than 2 nickels to rub together.

So Mark. The gauntlet has been laid.

yes I'd lean towards this as their 'reasoning' rather than their desire to build up page rank . Either way they ballsed things up

I've had a lot of discussions lately with potential clients about brand dilution. That's one of te concerns they bring to the table when they are discussing getting into affiliate marketing, or they already have a program running wild out there that they feel is leaning too much towards brand dilution, and not enough towards incremental growth.

Even still, Alexa and PR have never come up as a criteria. Nor do I see me ever bringing them up in the future. They're bad benchmarks for anything, much less for picking affiliate partners.

It's one thing to be selective. It's another to misunderstand the channel.

This morning, the affiliate manager for this program emailed me back ("I'm sorry. There must have been a mistake.") and re-approved me for their SAS affiliate program. (I've sent a reply pointing to this thread.)

That would be a hard pill to take. An apology is nice, but at this point I'm sure you're a bit soured on the program in general. I've made my share of mistakes, but I'm overly cautious when it comes to the decision to terminate affiliates (unless they're Parasites - no sleep lost over booting those chumps!).
