Unhappy What's this site up to?
I'm browsing through the advertising offers on ebay, and I see this auction for a text link on a pr8 website. Since the bidding was at $3 I decided to check it out. Looked ok...pr8. BUT when I checked the cache on google, it shows cj.com - what's up with that? I'm thinking it's not a good idea to bid on this!!

Gotta link? I know CJ is a PR8 but I think that auction doesn't seem quite right.

    Ann,

Please don't check in while on splash mountain, it will ruin your laptop.....Don't ask me how I know. As for the 3 buck ad on CJ, what a bargain! LOL I too think there is something fishy here.

Yep, cache is CJ.com and look at the links on the bottom. If CJ knew, I'm sure they would handle it. And don't bid on that They're doing some sneaky stuff.

There are some pages that tell how to do that. (I'm not going to name the technique or link to any of those pages.)

Basicallly, the PageRank is not real. It'll go away next time Google does an update.

Fake pagerank? How often does google update? Doesn't it constantly update?

Google updates the index constantly but Page Rank not sure. And then if you have the actual page rank and toolbar page rank, what you can see if you have the toolbar or some code on your pages. Any SEO experts out there can correct me on that, not sure. But I think page rank in the toolbar updates every couple/few months, something like that.

As far as their affiliate program, was reading some forums and people posting they're not getting paid and other problems:

Michael Coley has it right. The method is called PR spoofing. It is a technique that is commonly used by scammers who sell a domain name based upon PageRank.

I won't go into the details either, but it is pretty simple to do--and a good way to get your domain name banned if you get caught. It only gives you a temporary boost with toolbar PageRank, which is not the same as the real PageRank for the page.
There's good, fast and cheap. Pick any two.

PR is definitely not updated too often. I am sure G is reindexing constantly. But I think they play games with PR themselves.

Well, somebody is falling for the scam. I just found a listing on eBay for the same seller and the bid is up to $124.72 for SIX months, but the auction where the bid is only $3.54 is only for THREE months. And the seller has a feedback rating of TWO.

If you look at the feedback, the links to the closed auctions are private. But, if you do an Advanced Search for the seller and include auctions that have ended, you can see the other auctions. The closed ones went for $0.01 (6 month), $0.06 (1 month), $7.16 (6 month), $120 (6 month).

Well, I don't know if this was such a bright idea on questseek's part. I just went to their real home page, and sure enough there are (in very tiny print) links at the bottom of the page next to the designation "premier advertiser." The very first one is a porn site. Wonder if that was the 1-cent winner or the 6-cent winner of one of their auctions?

Sites fake PR by looking for the Googlebot, then redirecting it to a high PR site, like Yahoo.com. Google sees that users actually land on Yahoo.com and the PR Bar in turn reflects the PR of the Yahoo.com rather than your site.

I've heard that a large % of the text links sold on ebay have fake pagerank.
