    Not really understanding about blogs
    Hi,
I am still very new to this and have read the threads about blogging.
I am hosted by abestweb domains using website tonight. I see that I can put up a forum on my site, Is this the same as a blog?
I am really confused about using wordpress. Can I use that with abestweb domains hosting? or stick to using the forum I create on my domain?

    Thanks

P.S. if this is in the wrong area, please move to correct one.

Forums and blogs aren't the same thing.

Forum software works like ABW. Some highlights: Members, unless restricted, can start new topics of their own (like you just did) and get responses, new responses bump a thread to the top of its area, and the format is different.

Blog software, on the other hand, is good for when one person (or a small group) make all the posts, and the visitors simply comment back to those posts rather than making threads of their own. Also, new comments don't percolate up old posts--there's no "bumping" effect. And, almost all blogs have a recognizable "blog format" for the front page and categories where as you scroll down, the posts get older. It's possible to see individual posts on their own pages, but the point (for regular viewers of a particular blog) is often to check the front page and see the latest entries.

Here's the blog of one of the WordPress founding guys--note the differences between that and a forum setup. www.photomatt.net

Can I use that with abestweb domains hosting?
I have nothing to do with that aspect, so I can't say *for sure,* but I would expect WordPress to be able to work with any hosting...

Forums are a lot like group sex.
Blogs are a lot like voyeurs watching one person masturbate.

I apologize in advance for the crass language, but this is how i actually think of it.

    Donuts....

Forums are like a classroom discussion. (prticipation based)

Blogs are like a college lecture. (Listen/read then comment on what I just told you)

    Thanks, that's cleaner and clear.

Yet I still like mine better still. One example... most often you can assume a college lecturer is qualified, not the case with bloggers.

    Interesting Donuts.
I would rather live my life as if there is a God and die
to find out there isn't, than live my life as if there
isn't and die to find out there is.

Decent analogy. I'd say it more like this...

Blogs are like watching The Real World on MTV.

Forums are like being a cast member on The Real World on MTV.

... Nevermind. That one sucked too.

Nice definitions on blogs and forums, kind of entertaining if I may say so, lols

IMO, blog differs from a forum as a blog has only one author (kind of like a journal) whereas in a forum based scenario, every member can start their own discussions. Blogs can be centered on a particular aspect as controlled by the blogger. Forums are usually an open topic discussion on just about anything.
