per sale = you get a percentage of the sale amount. (commission)

per lead = you get a specified amount per lead (could be anything from just an email address or full contact info, such as email, phone, mailing address).

per click = if your visitor clicks on your affiliate link to the merchant, you get whatever amount they pay per click.

Google Adsense and Kontera are examples of Pay Per Click. You can consistently make about $3 a day on a high content site that gets about 200-300 visitors a day with either of these PPC programs (or both on the same site can sometimes move it closer to $5 or $6 a day, although that varies depending on the site)

RingCentral has a Pay Per Lead program where you get $15 if someone signs up for a free trial (they're willing to pay you good money just to get people to try out their program).

They also pay you $30 per sale if that person decides to purchase their monthly email fax service, so you end up getting both the $15 and the $30.

Just an example of each type of pay system.

I use a combination of all 3, but make much more money overall on the pay per sale model. PPC means watching the pennies trickle in every few hours, whereas PPS is like getting a money bag dropped in your lap every few days. And with higher traffic and nicely targetted sites, the analogy moves to "Pennies per minute" vs "money bags per hour"... that's when it gets REALLY fun and exciting! (or at least so I've heard )
