It depends on what you are looking for. I like UBB. The only feature I miss is the email notification that comes standard with vB. Sometimes dealing with database issues is a pain. I don’t know what type of hosting situation you have with this site, and that seems to be the most relevant factor in deciding what type of system to use. If you go with vB eventually your data base will get some corruption and crash. You have to be prepared to fix it yourself, or know that the tech support people your host has are competent in MySQL. My forum generally averages one big db crash a month.

We apologize for the inconvenience there seems to be a slight problem with the database. An email has been dispatched to our staff.

I remember running the version 1.xx vb and it would send an email for every person that loaded that error message. My forum crashed one day while I was away and I had like 8,000 –9,000 messages in my inbox the next day.

I will give it a tentative

DUH Jill, try http://www.VBulletin.com

Sigh...

Don't see a huge difference up front, just a few smal things.

Haiko, why don't you let us in on your feelings for changing it -- it'll help us give some input.

Jill,

Haiko,

Then don't fix it. Keep it like it is, that way no one has to worry about registering again or maybe losing all of the previous posts contained on the site.

IMHO

I like this one. I'd like to be able to convince my users to change to it, but they like things the way they are.

So I guess that'd be a <IMG src=http://www.abestweb.com/ubb/icons/icon13.gif> vote for me.

Personally I like Vbulletin over UBB. It has many features that make online reading easier such as the ability to jump to the newest post in a topic instead of having to remember what page you last read.

I like being able to subscribe to specific boards and see only those when I go to see which have new messages.

I know I've not been a member around here long and I don't say much but I have been reading since Haiko began this board and I hung around at the CJ boards too. But I figured I'd give my input on this

When Geek first switched to VB I hated it but after I got used to it I found I like VB boards more.

Vbulletin is far better. And, for what I remember, it's MUCH cheaper then this software too.

Have you tried to use the search tool on this forum? It takes ages if you have to search through every forum.

Does this forum use a plain text database or a mySQL etc one? When I moved from UBB to Vbulletin my server load went down by massive amounts....

It's silly to discount a better piece of software just because SI use it. So do thousands of other companies.

You won't need to re-register or lose posts if you move to it btw.....

Haiko, I would only move over if you're finding your server load to be massive or if in the not-so-distant future the message board gets so big it takes an age to process
any sort of posting/request/search...

Maybe Haiko can purge out all the posts over 30 days old...or use web ink that disappears when the 30 days expires. This boards mission seems to be to respond to daily issues and I only look through posts no more than 5 days old.

ALL,

It seems that the features you want from the poop is addressed in a new offering caled UBB Threads™ .

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>
UBBThreads™ software is ideal if you:

- Plan to have a community with more than 20,000 registered members
- Plan to retain thousands of messages for searching

Have in-house resources with SQL database expertise.

What features differentiate UBBThreads™ software from UBB™ software?

- Users can switch back and forth between threaded and non-threaded (linear) format
- Users can choose "skins" to change the appearance of the community
- Printer-friendly option for topics
- Admins can use multiple front-end servers for load sharing
- Member list browsing
- Choose a language on the fly
- Hidden forums ( Making it Pranav proof )
- Message pre-screening
- Who's online
- Fast, powerful search engine
<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
