Does Changing Affiliate Link Affect SE Rank?
Did you ever only change affiliate links on a site or page and see any impact on your search engine positioning?

For example, if you have a site that ranks well and you only change your affiliate links to the merchant will your SE positions be affected? Does anyone have any experience with this type of situation?

What kinds of links are you talking about? Product links have to be changed frequently to keep up with merchant changes. But somehow I think you're talking about something different, I'm just not sure what.

I would think it depends on what percentage of the content on the page you are changing when changing an affiliate link. But I do not believe making one or two changes to pages with decent content will hurt. If anything I believe continual tweaking helps.

Thanks for your input. Maybe I need to offer a better example. If you have links to a merchant's in-house program and the merchant switches to a network like ShareASale. If you only change the in-house links to SAS links, and not change any content on the pages, would this affect SE ranks?

I do not think changing existing outbound links would impact SE rankings unless you add a lot of additional links out and dilute your PR by doing so. Be careful to block outbound links from being followed by the SE's whenever possible.

One merchant decided to totally change the links which rendered the links on my sites obsolete and yes, this caused a drop in my SE positioning.

    I was livid

I thought about discontinuing [the merchant] but I had made money with this merchant, so I'm trying to make repairs ASAP *but* I am also looking for other merchants with similar products. I've found in this biz that the affiliate can not rely on only one merchant.

Greg, I don't think changing link destination URLs to a network tracking server would change anything in terms of search engine rank. There was a time when I thought maybe it mattered but... I think it's really about the content of the page, and quality inbound links to that site/page.

Some may still believe that Google et al recognize network links and ding Affiliates, but I don't think so.

A good solution if you're concerned would be to use internal redirects. We give Affiliates internal redirect advanced config. options for outbound links on the datafeed client which many embrace.

That is what this affiliate is thinking, that changing links over to SAS would hurt his rank with Google.

    Thanks all for your input.

out bound like can kill a site if you link to a bad neighbor, but I don't think this effect network links at all. Regarding SAS they are one of the few if not the only long standing network that is not blocked by adware products that i know of. That's worth something right there Greg
