    Tracking What If
What if every merchant had a $1.00 digital product earmarked for testing. The affiliate could spend a dollar any time he was curious to see if it was still working.

I'm talking about something like a gift cert that wouldn't take shipping to complete. It could even be a download of a .pdf saying "Here it is you doubting Thomas".

Lack of faith in tracking is popping up in thread after thread these days. Most of the time it gets honestly broken like what happened to Checks Unlimited a few days ago.

Now a totally crooked merchant might fix it so his test product always tracked regardless, but this would probably be rare.

There is a forum here to report whether a merchant tracked, but just because it tracked today doesn't mean it will 3 months form now after they redo their site.

I have bought all kind of stuff that wasn't really needed to test tracking. You can only go so far that way.

Why do you think that would be rare? The whole point of a test is because you don't trust the merchant, so why would you give him the chance to set up a test product that magically always tracks??

The only valid test in my opinion is a random test that the merchant can't plan ahead for, and doesn't know is coming.

And it should be from a machine other than the one you log into CJ/LS/SAS from (so the merchant can't know from your IP address that it's you - that's how Google finds out if you're clicking your own links btw, they track your IP address when you log in to check your balance, and they compare that to the IP addresses of each click).

Not for me although trust can be a factor. I like to be able to go through the whole site like a customer. Sometime what you see in the final stages of check out can be interesting. Some merchants are open to suggestions on how to make it all flow better for the customer and the affiliate.

It all goes together to help me decide how hard to try for the merchant. Testing can always give inaccurate results. They have to be considered with all the other information you have.

good point bumpaw, that's a smart thing to do as well, and a good reason to run through a test purchase.
