    Hi All

Interesting turn of events, it would appear Shawn Collins is considering promoting a Top Moxie Style (branded tool) to his members.... so they can earn points while using his shopping links....

This would be an interesting turn of events.....would look like a "can't beat them join them" cop out.

    Cheers

    Chris

I went to the site, are you talking about ClubMomRewards? I don't know if it's "Top Moxie" style i don't think its out yet. But if all it does is offer rewards for shopping at certain places that aint so bad. Thats just a regular incent site. As long as it doesn't pop up anything on my site or delivers a pop up or something to interfere with a customer i send to a merchant via one of my affiliate links, its ok

At present it is a pure discussion, however my take on any kind of install is that, if your users are already on your site and click your links then WHY do you need an install of any kind to track them?

Hopefully Shawn will see that the idea isn't overly cool and will find some other way to track points.

    cheers

My take on that discussion is that it is very much at a theoretical stage and was aimed at merchant feedback, which he isn't getting much of.

I don't believe that most merchants think about all the long term repricussions of the shopper pop-up applications.

For instance, I pushed one recently on a day where Ebates was redirecting every single aff link for a few hours on their program (not just mine, I checked multiple aff sites). Yah, yah, a "glitch", and it was "corrected" in a few hours. But I pushed the AM on trying to explain to me the advantage for a merchant on having every free SE listing of theirs, every PPC listing, and every bookmark monetized by Ebates. He put in a call to CJ for explanation.

I'm sure they'll have some explanation that will calm him, but I ask any merchant affiliated with these apps just what the advantage of having every click monetized really is.

Today I got a note from a merchant who is lowering their network wide commission rate at cj that my rate wouldn't be lowered (track record is good for my account). When I typed in the domain name to my IE address bar to show hubby how much cool stuff they have, Ebates MMM redirected me to a different merchant. Another "glitch". I searched on google for the merchant, clicked through, got redirected to the other merchant. Searched on MSN, and they have a Wed Directory listing (i.e. they get to pay LookSmart for each click). Clicked through, got redirected to the other merchant. Went to Ebates site, clicked through to the same merchant, and oh wow, got to the merchant I was trying to show hubby.

How much traffic will they loose while this "glitch" gets "corrected"?

Of course, my aff links are straight network links, so they are not getting overwritten, so this is totally within the COC.

Oh, yes, and then I went to another merchant last week by address bar type-in to search for something and MMM popped up on the site with a reminder that I could save on this similar category if I clicked through their little link and went through Ebates. The merchant is not affiliated with Ebates. I notified the merchant, but today was the first day I haven't seen that cute little reminder pop-up at their site.

So merchants, what ARE the advantages of allowing these apps in your affiliate programs?

Sure and when profits are down at Clubmom, they can start randomly overwriting affiliate links on other sites, which would be fair since they have done so much for the community. One day there will be hundreds of these little apps crashing people's machines everywhere. I guess it will increase one side of my business, the repair end.

I'm with you there Qball. I'm adding a stupidy surcharge on all repair bills if the customer has to have me install 3 B-a-HO removal applications to CLEAN their system.

I you saw a thread on Iafma (http://iafma.org/gm/forums/showthrea...s=&postid=4231) about this topic. Shawn said he would only use one of those reminder tools at ClubMom if the referrer was not an affiliate (directly or cookied). If it wasn't possible to do that, he said he wouldn't use one of those tools.

I responded to Marifer's link at iAmfa earlier today.

Putting perfume on the BHO piglet
    Hi Shawn;

I see your in a quandry caused by your chosen ebiz plan (online incentive marketing) and the ethics issues raised by BHO theftware. Too many lunches with Jeff Molander, Wayne or the fine folks at TopMoxie has your head spinning. So let's get to the givens you have no control over and work from there.

In the real world of commerce the most merchants control and manage their own reward/incentive programs with internal staff. I do recall it is a Walmart employee taking my application and fee for a Sam's wholesale club card and likewise getting a VIP discount card from local department stores and even the casinos. The only reason incent rebate/coupon/earn points/get paid to surf sites exist is because of lazy merchant affiliate managers unwilling to take on the task as they should.

    Givens:
At any given moment less than 1% of the worlds consumers are interested in buying anything from anyone -anywhere. Contrary to the Ad industries hype we all don't stumble on home from 14 hours spent daily shopping at the Mall or online stores. Therefore the Clubmom members would prefer you leave them alone 99% of the time.

No one can refute that 80% of the online public not only hate popup and unders ...they loath them. So now you want to allow your BHO to follow -track and trigger popups on any web page that contains shopping oriented keywords. Hey baby that's most all of them. So you don't mind irratating your customers whenever online with a BHO popup service if it pads your pocket.

The networks secretly automated the BHO technology providers who like you sell NOTHING. They are all parasitic middlemen hawking incent deals at the point of sale not chained to a domain. Why so they could get a cut on the double dipping these S/W affiliates do by monitizing ALL links to a merchants domain...even the non-commissionable ones.

You stand on the pinacle ,resting your feet on the shoulders of a group of incent middlemen hell bent on running normal value-add affiliates out of business. I invite you to find your esteemed breathern of incent Dupers littering Pud's F'dcompany.com Hall of Shame. They didn't have BHO's to help them steal even more as they plunged to their rightful place in .com history. Now the commission sharks are eating at your sales and enticing your loyality shoppers away with 200 varieties of Theftwarez.

Now Clubmom chooses to add their name to the Ad-Aware and other adware/spyware removal tools labeling your members in the same breath as those of the P2P wanks -WhenU -iWon -Upromise- eBates and Gator clans. Your efforts to choose just the right theftwarez package offered by the Den of Thieves, and have it modified and perfumed like a prize pig, is less than nobel.

My advice is to get off your lazy butt and develop out your site with merchant showcases, hot selling product links, high conversion merchants who can instantly gratify your loyality shoppers with low prices on name brand goods. If this is too much effort then for heavens sake don't justify your membership fee like Sam's Club or CostCo does ...and jump on the B-a-HO bandwagon.

I agree with webmistress. Chris's post makes a very good point. Hopefully Shawn isn't really considering going down this road.

Somehow, it just seems a bit too close to what we've been fighting so hard against.
