Is it just me or is this lame practice on the rise?

I get lots of referrer spam from lame ass sites like

-http://www.easywebpromotion.com/entry.html (where they actually advertise the practice)
    -http://www.virtual-private-server.com/
    -http://www.zwnet.com/ewp.html
-http://www.bonzi.com/bonziportal/index.asp (UGH) - could be from a search
    -http://activeurls.com/

As if... I'd use any company promoted through this means.

I like the ones from Fantomaster personally - plus the constant requests for non-existent pages like stats.html . Sorry, Ralph, but I'm a bit too canny for that.

Yup, extremely annoying. They call it a new form of viral advertising. More like a new form of . I emailed innerprise to request on of my sites they were spamming was removed from their campaigns. Can't remember which site of mine it was though, so not sure if the request worked.

Can someone explain how this works? I often get a referrer from a either a competing site or one that simply does not have my links anywhere.

What the heck is the point of doing this?

    No affiliaation.

Been thinking of targeting the adult industry on new project BUT I'm worried of a bad reaction from the webmasters.

Many sites have referrer pages (mine does, but it's only accessable with password, not by bots) - they're trying to get SE hits.

Thanks Adam for the explaination link. The traffic con-men at work with a slight twist to the old CPC cheat scripts... they plant phoney visitors in your server log files. Then sell you that the site owner will click on your log file link....buttholes

"Besides bringing direct visitors to your website, referral log marketing also boost your website's search engine ranking dynastically. This is because modern search engines rank websites by number of links linked to the site. Adding millions of sites links to your site will help your site appear at the top of the search results in stead of hiding far behind."

eh, i think some have it confused, (what I'm talking about anyway) all they do is grab some of your pages but stuff the referrer field with their URL (not hard to do with perl, or, most command line browsers, etc)... so you're looking through your logs and you see a bunch of referrals from -www.scumbags-site.com and you either think they linked to you.. maybe some even give a link back to them.. or you go and check out -www.scumbags-site.com and wow you're so amazed at their convincing ad copy that you instantly open your wallet and buy whatever crap that they are selling.... Doesn't seem like it would be very effective to me.. except at annoying webmasters..

Referer spamming is usually aimed at blog sites most ly because bloggers like to link to and publish their own web access logs (for some strange reason). This provides for an easy way to generate in-bound links and increase search engine placement.

There are thousands of high PR blog sites out there anyone could hit using a referer like <pre class="ip-ubbcode-code-pre">Adult Friend Finder Free WebCams</pre>

    Easy SEO.
