    Spam on Overdrive Lately
I don't know about you guys but I'm getting spammed heavily lately. I keep adjusting SpamAssasin to catch more but it just keeps coming. I'm getting hit from all around, contact form spam, comment spam, email spam, ugh. I've got this theory that maybe these form submits include some sort of 'website' or 'url' variable that I can use to ignore them (I don't collect a website URL). I'm dumping submitted post variables to see if I can identify some fields that aren't part of my forms.

I have noticed this too and think it will continue to get worst as the spammers find new ways to pass the filter software.

Constantly receiving emails about baldness, viagra, *enlargement*, and market tips really could make you paranoid!

Same here, it seems like it picked up around 3-5 weeks ago. My spam filter is catching about 95% of it but I'm seeing more and more emails in spam folder.

Same. There are two folders where all my junk and 'maybe' junk goes to that I hardly even look at anymore, just maybe once a day with a quick visual search through the 'subject', then hit delete.

Remember when some offices had the receptionist open all the mail and you even had a mail room and the guy went around delivering all the mail to the offices/cubicles? Maybe it's time set one up online, not that I would send or even trust my mail being cleared/sorted that way either, lol.

Tis, for sure. And it's becoming a real Pain in the A**.

About two years ago I moved ALL of my email off-server, and have gone with third-party email (that still allows me to download and save what I need).

GMail has great filters and AOL has good filters But I have also been happy with Everyone.net's private email service, which I have been using for several years. I first used them for an affinity email service for users on two of my community sites (which Everyone.net supports via ads - but users can "buy off" the ads). Their "Spamshield" works well. I use my own domains with Everyone.net and Google also allows you to "brand" your email with your own domain.

As, Jorge suggested, I also do a quick scan of my Spam and Trash folders. It is very seldom that I catch a real email among the filtered rubbish.

Filters just aren't going to cut it, they keep modifying their email to work around it. What needs to occur is a billing process, which would eliminate 99.999999999 percent of emails, even if the charge was broken down to 1/100 of a penny. I believe Mike was pushing this a decade ago.

Getting hit here, but the only way I notice is my spam folder is bigger, faster.

One thing, I've been getting a ton of phishing for BofA, and it's getting through the filters.

I counted my junk mail last week and I'm getting about 3000 pieces of spam a DAY. This is just my inbox, not forum spam, which is not a problem since making new members check a box stating that they are "real people."

What a fiasco. email was such a wonderful invention ...*sigh*

Yeah, spam galore for me, too.

I use gmail for almost all of my email. For the year or more I've used it, I had just about zero spam emails a day getting into my inbox.

About 4 months ago, I noticed a serious increase of mail getting past the until-then-terrific gmail spam filter.

Now I get about 10-20 spam email a day into my inbox, as though all at once the poor little gmail spam filter just died from all that effort.

Indeed, a look at a gmail group on google groups tells me folks there have noticed a radical breakdown in gmail's spam filtering in recent months.

So -- do I try one of the many spam filters to run my pop3 gmail through? Or is it just easier to delete the 10-20 a day and forget about installing and training a spam filter (such as PopFile, SpamBayes, etc.)?

What I dislike most is the ability of others to use spam directed at other people like its coming from one of our sites. When you check to full headers of the returned email then you see where it originated and it wasn't your site that sent it. And these people just are able to keep on doing it, day in and day out.

I'm wondering how tight SpamAssasin could be set. I'm using 6 with only a few spams getting by.

I was at 6 and it was okay for a while. Now I'm down to 4 and they still get through.

Oddly, my email spam is pretty minimal (without using any filters), but form and comment spam have been bugging me no end. I'd like to give adsenseboy and a few others a good thrashing for their idiotic bot generated comments...

    I get tons if spam.

The gov't promised, but has failed to curtail it and enforcement is laughable.

I'm ready for the fraction of a penny per email fee as a solution - with zero exceptions, even gov, edu, non-profit and org. Everyone pays.

Funds generated should be used to combat all forms of cybercrime.

As the presidential candidates yap about things they'll never get done, I'm ready to vote for any politician whose platform contains substantial cybercrime initiatives - none of them are talking about it - it's an easy winner!

Eliot Spitzer, the former Attorney General of New York, went after lots of cyber turds as the NY AG... remember, we posted about him LOTS here, back then... anyone know what he's doing with himself these days... yep, he got 69% of the vote and is now the Governor of New York state.

People are sick of cybershit and it's meaningful and real to too many. It's in our country's financial interests to halt it in it's tracks now.

One of the candidates needs to step up to this issue - it's not hard to solve, somebody just has to decide the time for change has arrived.

    Bravo, Donuts! Nicely stated.

I, too, would support that platform.

We use Cloudmark and it is awesome. It rarely misses the spam and very seldomly sends legit email to the spam folders.

Without it I would be sunk. With the number of email addresses we have we are bombarded.

Would also support some sort of cost to send email but hard to determine who would be compensated by the fees generated.

My spam mail would be decimated if there were no men. At least 90 percent of the spam I receive has to do with improving male performance and anatomy.

Okay, let me rephrase that. My spam mail would be decimated if there were no stupid, insecure men. That's better.

And yes, spam has been through the roof here for the last week or two. I'm guessing there's a new player trying to muscle in on the usual suspects.

My SPAM filter was on the fritz this afternoon, would you believe 42 pieces made it through between 3-4, and of course I get my Viagra sale notification every morning.
