Blog or No Blog - Can't Decide
I am not sure whether to create my new site as a blog or a regular old site. I know blog sites are more SEO friendly. I think my apprehension about blogs is having less development control? Maybe I need to investigate WordPress more.

It's a good idea. And as far as control over customization, they do allow a lot of it.

My best performing site is a blog that I started a couple of years ago (makes sense b/c of SEO and tons of content). Unfortunately, it's a niche that I can't really profit that much from, other than through Adsense and links. So annoying to see all of that untouchable traffic..

I say go for it, if it'll be your first time. Working with blogs, and Wordpress is a fun project. Good luck.

Just make sure that you host WP on your own host and not at WP.

If you use your own host you can do anything that you want to do with WP.

I think you said you use HostGator.

Just tell your cpanel at HG to install WP and it will install it in about 2 minutes.

You'll find it under fantastico on your cpanel home page.

I think combining a blog with a traditional web site would work great. Link them back and forth to keep momentum. :-)

Thanks BB for the suggestion. I installed WP through cPanel. I also downloaded a new theme and installed it. Now, is there a good tutorial on wordpress and/or modifiying wordpress? For example, what is a "Blogroll". Are there any must-do changes I should make in regards to SEO or other?

I use wordpress all the time.

Its menus aren't good by default, so you can install plugins to fix that. You can't do IFrames either.

Blogroll - a list of websites(blogs) that you are linking to.

Explore the plugin list on Wordpress.org

If you installed with fantastico you probably installed version 2.2.2 version 2.3 has been released and the plugins work differently because of a change in how categories are used. If you are not yet using 2.3 upgrade it before playing with plugins since the best ones have already been fixed.
Upgrading is very easy. You just DISABLE all plugins, upload the 2.3 versions files and then run wordpressinstalldir/upgrade.php before enabling plugins.
    or maybe it was wordpressinstalldir/wp-admin/upgrade.php

no, you can't do everything, but you can do a lot. As long as you don't need external files, external pages, or javascript and you don't need complicated menus then wordpress will be great for you.

If you like having a blog but you want more, you can install wordpress in a separate directory and have your index.html point to it as a link. You could do the opposite as well. Have your wordpress install in the domain HTML root and install your other html pages in a separate directory and link to them for example an external forum.

If you have any other questions ask away

Is there a big need to go from 2.2.2 to 2.3?

I'm using 2.2.2 and it seems to be working fine.

No, there isn't a big need to upgrade to 2.3 except for plugins and the new tagging and URL redirect features.
You can read about the improvements on wordpress.org.

Not sure if you already know, but there's a great help system, and forum for those working with WP:

    http://wordpress.org/support/

I spent many hours looking through their support to figure things out.

It seems the main link at the top is not working. Why would it set the top link of the blog to the name?
    Code:
    <h1><a href="<?php bloginfo('name'); ?>"><?php bloginfo('name'); ?></a></h1>
    Code:
    <h1><a href="Name Of Site Here">Name Of Site Here</a></h1>

What do you mean by 'it is not working' ?

What is it doing or what do you think it should do?

Well, name is set to some text like "My New Blog Blah Blah".

And the code is setting href="My New Blog Blah Blah". It's setting the href to the text name of the site not the actual url of the site.

    Log in to your WP.

    Click on OPTIONS.

See what it says there and change whatever needs to be changed to make it right.

Be sure to click on - updateoptions - when you are through making your changes.

See if that solves your problem.

You could try a different theme if that theme gives you an error message. I just checked a theme I'm using and the header link works perfectly. There is a huge directory of themes on the wordpress.org site if it is down do a search online. Get a theme with the layout you like and edit the colors and graphics later.

You could also compare header.php files between themes and copy over the code from one that does work.

Honestly, I'd say you're going about this wrong. You should try using Wordpress before getting into its coding. Make posts, categories, pages, etc.; edit your blogroll and then get into the code.
Editing the CSS file of course is not a big deal.

Ok, I have written 5 posts now and I can't understand what the deal is with the text alignment. When I view the post after saving it, about half way down in the article, one of the lines of text goes way past the right margin. Why did that one line not adhere to the width constraints?

If it is an unbroken line of text then that will happen. Just insert a space.
If it is a URL then make it into a link with the name of the page or site.

If you'd like me to take a look PM me the URL of your page

As you learn and use WordPress more, you'll probably get into tinkering around with various themes, installing them, using them, discarding them, etc.

BEWARE -- WordPress theme play can become very addictive and take away valuable work time. (

On that subject, I would recommend you look at some of the themes made by Brian Gardner. Don't know the gentleman and have no stake in his work, but he makes some really nice, useful WordPress themes. (I believe his stuff has been discussed on these forums before.)

No links, just text. Just a regular old sentence with 20 words in it.

Most of my WordPress based sites use a heavily edited version of Brian Gardner's downtown java.... of course you wouldn't recognize them since I changed the colors, button images, and in some cases column widths.
