I have a few select Merchant Links on my Home page. The question is: If a visitor clicks on the link/banner do I direct them: Directly to the merchant site or direct them to a detailed page about the merchant? These are General Links not product links.
I am thinking that I sent them directly to merchant site (in a new window).

It all depends on the context.
If the text around your link says something like "find out more about MerchantName" then send them to the about page.
On the pother hand, if the text around your link says something like "Visit MerchantName" then send them to the merchant's home page.

Direct them to the merchant's page for some milk and a cookie

Make sure that your landing page is as specific as possible. If the link is anything more than general (ie, see newest arrivals, top sellers at, 50% off, etc) use links that are as direct as possible so the visitor doesn't have to guess where to go to get to the "context" of the link. Ideally, one click should get them where you want them to go to "convert a sale".

The Links I am currently displaying on my Homepage are Merchant Links not product links. So say I have a general Image for sears (example only) I currently send them to the Sears homepage. On my other topic pages I will send them to the subpage related to that topic.
