How do I know if I'm performing well enough in a particular program to ask my affiliate manager to give me a better commission? Does LinkShare have a certain sales threshold to determine which affiliates get a bump? How does this work basically?

Just ask. You might be surprised.I would rather live my life as if there is a God and die
to find out there isn't, than live my life as if there
isn't and die to find out there is.

It differs highly from a program to a program. Some will not offer any commission bumps until you become one of their top 3, 5 or 10 [for more established programs] affiliates. Some will not negotiate even if you're their #2 affiliate... Asking, however, would definitely not hurt (if you have a merchant with a better [or equal] commission to promote instead of them, it may help your cause).
