ok, finally broke down and decided to buy a notebook. Now, just not sure how much power I need when I'll only need it for building sites, surfing, and ocassionally uploading pages.

What kind do you all have? any suggestions? any special deals around?

    thanks

Notebooks are horrid little things.. nasty keyboards, bad economics, expensive to buy, really expensive to repair. Give me a nice desktop with a big screen and decent keyboard any day.

If you really do need a portable computer, then the first thing I'd recommend looking at is HOW portable. (Well, actually maybe the first thing to decide is if you want a PC or one of those lovely 17" portable Macs.)

Also, decide on your budget. Something like a top-of-the-range Toshiba Tecra 9100 costs in excess of $2200, so the sky is the limit.

I quite like Toshibas as being reasonably OK in terms of spec and reliability. I don't like Compaq notebooks at all. In my real life work we have well over a hundred Toshibas, some of which are five years old and work perfectly and are used every day. We start buying Compaq Evo laptops about a year ago and they are extremely unreliable and have really nasty keyboards.

Oh yes, TigerDirect have some really inexpensive stuff in their bargain bin if you're not fussed about spec.

    MsMary,

I just bought a new notebook from IBMDirect on Ebay ... Mine was similar to This One and bought an extra 512 MB of ram from crucial. Check out the entire list Here.

I have a Toshiba Satellite, a few years old, only 500 MHz, but it is perfect for using the internet and site building (notepad and PaintShop Pro, might be slow if I were using anything more sophisticated).

I think if you get 1 GHz or above and 256 MB RAM you will be set for several years.

I second the comment about the Canon reliability issue. Stay away from them, at least until they get the bugs worked out.
