The principle is sound. Many (many, many) years ago in science classes I used to demonstrate the flow of electricity between two dissimilar metals in an acidic medium. With copper and zinc rods stuck into a lemon we could read the voltage produced on a multimeter. But there was not a strong enough current to light even a tiny lightbulb. Do a Google for "lemon battery" or something similar and you should find many examples...
I could not, however, have done that in class with an iPod. They hadn't been invented yet.
