SARS has been identified as a form of the Corona Virus (an animal virus) according the the BBC.

If we weren't at war this would likely be one of the leading stories.

I'm also located up here in Toronto, and this seems to be very serious. I think 5 people have died so far in Toronto.

    Any one know

    1. US Side : what is happening to people who arrive on planes from HK or Singapore who didn't actually visit HK or Singapore (i.e. changed planes in HK or Singapore only)

    2. How long is the flight from LA to NY

    3. How good is UA, reviews I have seen are not good.

    Thanks

    Chris

I just spent 4 days in toronto this weekend. Getting back in the US was a snap. I told the border guy I was in toronto and that I was a US citizen and he sent me through. Didn't even check my ID...

I've just cancelled my flight to Hong Kong, WHO has said "don't go there", I was set to go via HK right up till 1 hour ago when the new warnings came out, first time in 10 years they've said that about a country.

Singapore is said to okay as containment has been good, so I'm going via Singapore.

I'll still probably get 14 days enforced sick leave when I get back to Thailand though. Schools in Thailand are banning parents who have been overseas from visiting schools for 14 days and their children for 10 days.

    Cheers

    Chris

Just to quote the BBC about HK..

quote:
The WHO said anyone intending to visit Hong Kong or Guangdong province "should consider postponing their travel until another time".
    [..]
It said the advice did not apply to other areas, such as Singapore, Vietnam or Canada, where outbreaks have been effectively contained.

It is the first time in more than a decade that the agency has advised travellers to avoid a particular area.

It's nasty stuff, but only fatal in about 4% of cases, typically where the victim has some other underlying condition.

How it *spreads* is still unknown, and it appears that it may well be airborne, i.e. it doesn't require close contact.

We had our first case here in the Philadelphia area. It was a doctor at the Phila Health Dept, for crying out loud. It was not fatal.

    PhillyBurbs, are you covering that?

Scary times. I'd imagine we'd be even more scared if the most of the headlines weren't already otherwise occupied and we had more news on the virus.
