I'm dreaming of a hot toddy...
If you've been paying attention you know that I'm a beer-drinking gal. But when the weather gets all wintry it makes me think about hot alcoholic beverages.

I'm fantasizing about hot chocolate with a shot of creme de menthe in it. I'm hoping it will taste like a liquid Andes mint. If I had any applejack or calvados in the house I'd be thinking along the lines of spiked mulled cider. (Make note to buy calvados.)

So what's your favorite hot alcoholic beverage? Recipe or link puleeze.

    Mulled Wine!!
    http://www.ehow.com/how_10318_make-mulled-wine.html

I usually just take the lazy way out and keep some "Holiday" from the Brotherhood Winery (A NY winery, The Oldest in America) in the cupboard for just such an occasion. Warm it up in a sauce pan and pour it into a coffee mug.

"Our famous traditional proprietary blend of red wine steeped with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, allspice and many more herbs and spices. All natural. The original recipe - don't be fooled by imitators. Try it hot!"

ummmm... I've gotta go do sumptin.

You're all going to think I'm a boor but -- I can't stand wine. The only thing I do with the stuff is use it for cooking. I like it in chicken cacciatore, for example.

But these are some good suggestions. I'm going to ponder them while I drink a beer! lol! (I know, I"m hopeless.)

Other than a "Mentirita" once in a blue moon, I don't drink alcohol.

And just to be clear: I don't drink alcohol, I only drink beer!

But, at least I learned two more words on this thread!

calvados = Dry apple brandy made in Normandy.
toddy = A mixed drink made of liquor and water with sugar and spices and served hot.

When I want a warm drink, I just don't put my beer in the freezer for 10 minutes before drinking, like I normally do.

That might have the Andes Mint taste, but haven't tried it. However we put peppermint schnapps in hot chocolate and that does taste like a York Peppermint Patty.

The hot mulled cider is good and we like the German tradition of Gluvine, a hot mulled spiced wine served at outdoor festivals during the Holiday season.

hmmmm . . .now you have me thinking of a reward for the several times I braved the drifts outside today. I've got this bottle of Conch Republic Dark Rum. Just a little sweet for my taste, but with some Swiss Miss and ohhhh I have some whipping cream, too. 'Bye!

Hot Chocolate and Amaretto, or Coffee and Amaretto, or ... I think you get the drift... whipped cream is good too.

Coffee, chocolate, half and half, sugar, Amaretto and whipped cream.... maybe toss in a shot of grey goose. ONE of those drinks will warm you for an entire night

I hardly ever drink, much less make any special ones. So clue me in on the proportions of these ingredients, please?

    Hum.. lets try this:

    Get a big mug
fill it 2/3 full with coffee
squirt in a lot of chocolate syrup
dump in a bunch of sugar
    add some half and half

Taste it and make sure it's good so far.

    pour in amaretto

    Taste again.

Add Amaretto until it tastes just right.

Top off with Whipped Cream and cinamon

    Enjoy.

The bigger the mug, the more of everything

Oh NO! The Grey Goose is good right out of the freezer. Instead put some Jamison's Irish Whiskey in that concoction and you'll have your own private (loxly) label Irish Coffee.

(My Irish Coffee recipe uses six liquors. )

Not good - I made the very bad mistake of heating eggnog once, YUCK

I don't reccommend it, but I did hear of a special recipe one time where it was a heated drink that was like eggnog with spiced rum and a cinnamon stick....

That's good to know, because it sounded like a good idea to me at the time (mind you, I'd had a few glasses of the cold stuff already!) Funny enough, I mentioned it to a few people and they pulled a face, too.

But I'd love to try that other recipe!

Southern Comfort instead of Jamisons. I know, I know, it's not Irish, but it's Damn smooth.....

And yeah, that is the tame recipe above. About once a year I make the above and for the alcohol part (reduce the coffee to 1/2 full mug ) I combine SoCo, Amaretto, Grey Goose, Peach Schnapps and Rum. That's only 5, but it's plenty and it lasts all night....

(I think I need a trip to a liquor store, lol, it's COLD here in NYC.... well, sorta cold...)

OK, Beachy's Irish Coffee: Irish Coffee mug/glass - 1 shot of Jamison's Irish Whiskey - 1/2 shot of Kahlua - splash of Amaretto (or Frangelica, depending on the nutty flavor you prefer) - splash of Liqor 43 - splash of Triple Sec - fill with real coffee to within a 1/2 inch of the top - add heavy whipped cream - drizzle green Creme de Menthe over the whipped cream. Do not use a cocktail straw, to drink properly this is to be sipped "through" the whipped cream.

    YUM
