Why are you so interested in hardware, my friend?

It's just a means to an end.

OK - just read all the responses to your other post. Obviously it is of interest.

I have an AMD in a machine I built myself, and I'm quite happy with it, except my graphics card won't work with Battlefield 1942....

Hmmm....I feel an upgrade coming on....

    OK - in a nutshell:

I would say, hardware is cheap nowadays.
You can go with Pentium or AMD.
AMDs run quite hot, so you need a good PSU and good ventilation in your system.
Unless you need a real cutting-edge machine to play games on, or for other purposes, purchase whatever you find at a reasonable price.

I like AMD and I have a 1500+ Athlon XP running now. It is quite hot 60+ Celcius. Not really worried about it since AMD says it can go until maximum 90. But I have 1 of my side case opened.

I work for a major distributor of computer components, and we supply both AMD and Intel processors to manufacturers and retailers.

I was having a chat with one of the directors - a PC diehard - and his opinion was that although the Athlon gets better performance than a Pentium 4, it has a serious flaw. If for any reason it become detatched from its heat sink, it will fry almost instantly. The P4 has internal temperature sensors and will detect this and reduce clock cycles to minimise output, thus protecting the hardware. His opinion was that a P4 was likely to be more reliable, especially if building the PC yourself.
