What does a web host mean when they say they only allow 'x' mb monthly transfer?

I know this is a stupid question, especially for the experts, but I am wanting t find something cheaper. My web host gives me 50 mb space, with unlimited monthly transfer. However, if the transfer thing is no big deal, then I will switch, 'cause I can get cheaper than what I'm paying now.

x MB monthly transfer is the size of all files transferred to or from your server in a month. Includes files you FTP to the server as well as files sent to web browsers of visitors on your site (if an HTML page is 20kB, then that is 20kB of your allocation everytime someone requests that page. There may be a way of checking how much transfer you are currently using at your current host to see if the new host is a viable option.

Thanks. That helps. This is what I thought it meant, but wasn't 100% sure.

A great web host is http://www.ehostsource.com. They give you 500MB of space and 50GB of transfer every month. The servers support MySql, PHP, Frontpage, SSI, and many others. They only charge $7.77 a month and usually give you a couple months free when you sign up for a year. We have used them for about two years now. You do need to know that their support is not the best. Far from the best. If you ever have a problem expect a two day turnaround on your question or problem. Check it out, it may be just what you are looking for.

Rather than worrying about cost, your primary concern should be performance. Saving $5-$10 a month really isn't worth switching to a host that's slower or, worse yet, isn't reliable.

    I would certainly recommend www.icdsoft.com

I have registered my first site with them on Sep 2002. I was very amazed at the support they offer. They answer you in a matter of minutes to hours.

I have registered my second site with them and they have a very helpful bunch of support team.

Big Chuck....be cautious of the words unlimited transfer. It doesn't exist and is used by hosts who oversell their available resources. They can tell you unlimited, but I can tell you that there will be a limit at some point. Read TOS very, very carefully.

There was some debate if we would use the term 'unlimited' in our Plan 7's. You are technically limited by the amount of space used by your sites. Some users have 3 sites in their 1 gig allotment...others have over 500.

Thanks, all for your input. I am in need of a webhost that is dummy friendly (me). I need to be able to have features like a mailing list, message board, confirmation pages along with the ability to use forms as I customize them in Front Page. My web host does all of the above, plus some features I have not perfected yet. However, they have been unable to allow me to customize my own forms page with Front Page and go to the confirmation page. They have a secure ordering form, but it has to gel with their serers capabilities. They give me a script to use for my customized forms with front page, but all that does is send the info and clear the fields. It does not take a customer to a confirmation page, and it is not secure.

I need a web host that can provide me with a message board that I can easily customize, and manage.

I have three sites (a fourth in the making) that have 800 uniques, approximately a day (combined). 500 (coupon site), 200 (gift site), and 100 (magazie site). I have around a total of 650 pages between the three sites. 300, 300, and 50. What kind of set-up would you good folks suggest?

Check out the demo control panel HERE
I use them for one of my sites and for 5 bucks a month I have no complaints. Fast and 100% uptime so far.
