    Hi,
I use bravenet free stats and got the following popup today:

    Wow.

I went over to their site looking for the first think that came to mind: where's the catch?

Couldn't find anything wrong with it. That's precisely what has me skeptical, too good to be true.

These days nearly everything-web is paid or has annoying ads why is this so ...free?

Don't know why its free either and makes me skeptical. Does it have bravenet branding on it? There are plenty of programs and companies that allow you to design your own corporate browser skin. In fact, creating a corporate skin is fairly easy.

Sounds like a bait-n-switch BHO scheme. Entice thousands to use the harmless plug-in and pass it on to other users. Meanwhile the BHO has a hidden backdoor giving the hteftware/spyware folks complete access to the users systems. Then POW ...load in Whenu -Gator and iMesh crapollla and infect all the users in one fell swoop.

    If it's FREE ...just FLEE

KCedit, it's not a bravenet service. They use popups from advertisers to pay their free services.
Mike, I see it the same way as you. They infect the PC and then they make their own deals.

Normal hard working affiliates have to devise ways to get traffic to their sites. The BHO-shopping bar folks only have to devise ways how to infect shoppers systems. Drive-bys -hidden bundles in FreeBees, adware virus laden spamms or paying those with already planted backdoors ( aka: P2P networks) a upload fee with splits on perloined commissions being very popular. What's a perfectly good BHO going to do to get loaded onto a unsuspecting victims machine? iGive gratiously devulges their relationship with TopMoxie, but many others just give it the old "wam-bam thank you mam" treatment, while passing on some veneral disease.
