I am getting a bit upset (subsitute your word here)
My routine for several weeks now is to check my server logs at 7:00 AM and then spend the next hour or more banning some more 'script kiddies site scrapers' from my sites. I'm only complaining because it seems to be getting worse and I'm not sure Apache is not going to hit a ban-limit.

Are others seeing an increase? Do more mature hands have insight like ' big mess near Christmas - then die down' or 'You're are in deep ...' or ...

try banning the agent string and forget the ips

    ie

    SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent "^Java/1.4.1-p3" bad_bot
    Order Allow,Deny
    Allow from all
    Deny from env=bad_bot

I agree with you, mrbshouse. When the attacker is a definable entity with a unique agent or referer string, I do ban the string and that works no matter which IP they use. I only do IP banning for the script kiddie bots using one IP.

I just don't remember the problem being so bad last year - is there some e-book out now that says 'to make a zillion dollars all you need to do is scan and scrape ...'
