Great read, pretty sorrowful that Sears would do this.
Following everyone else is a GREAT way to become average.

This is really sad. Why in the world would Sears need such personal information like "completing an application form, or checking your...personal financial or health information."?

Makes one wonder how many people would agree to the install if they knew Sears was mining this data.

    Great article.

Hmmm, I wonder who manages their SEM data collection and analysis...

One nice thing about this article is that is should get a lot of mainstream press and get the FTC's attention as well. If someone like Sears is deploying this shitake, during a time when identity theft data mining is running rampant, it's a sign that it's widespread and needs some focus by folks that are supposed to be policing here.

Here's a wonderful follow up article as well, from the Washington Post!
    http://blog.washingtonpost.com/secur..._broken_1.html

In this article, they also describe how Sears posts this data on a publicly accessible website. If you know someone's name and address and phone number (or get it from the phone book), you can look up their shopping data!

This kind of crap sheds suspicion on all online businesses. From one of the comments:

I wonder how many other big companies are involved in such practices?
Won't people think that if Sears does it all sites do it too?

The outcome of this story will affect my decision to ever shop at Sears again. They've got plenty of competition, it's not like I need to shop there.
