My newest blog just received its first comment spam today.
I feel like the blog is now officially "on the map."

We have discussions boards on our main e commerce sites and we get some pretty vulgar stuff posted there regularly.

Glad someone or something is posting comments to your blog. But many posts will turn people away and can be offensive.

Ha I totally know the feeling... I received my first comment spam last week. I decided to leave it up since it's harmless, but going forward gets no mercy!

"Harmless" or not, if you leave it up, the spammer gets a linkback from your site, doesn't he/she?

That's why I delete all the spam comments that come along, which very few of get past Akismet on my blogs.

But if they do get past Akismet -- WHACK!!

Most blog platforms automatically "nofollow" tag everything now. But, they might still get traffic from your traffic if you leave them up.

Eww, that would be so annoying. It could be a full time job policing a forum.
I moderate blog comments, so no one but me ever saw it.

I spent 3 hrs yesterday updating the posts.. now only to keep it hidden. Thanks spammer.

I trusted my users. This was a manual submission from someone who posted before, so I think their first link was to test the waters... to seem legit.

Now I have to modify my code so that I manually approve each submission.

Wow. That could prove to be time consuming, but hopefully the reward outweighs the inconvenience for you. What a shame it has to be like that though.

I've noticed too, that comment spammers are getting smarter. I think the new trend is to have human beings posting comment spam, not 'bots, which is why they are getting past Akismet. I deleted a couple comments yesterday (on a different blog). The deleted comments seemed to be on topic, but a closer look revealed that they were indeed spam.

I've found that I need askimet and SK2 in order to get spam to a manageable level. Askimet used to be enough but for my most popular blogs, I have to double up on the protection.

Will take a look at SK2. Thanks for the recommendation.

I probably should have written that SK2 is called Spam Karma...I just couldn't think of it at the time.

I think you're onto something there.. in this case, I could trace the visit, it was manual.

Also spent a little time this aft, and found a snippet of code that will send me an email when someone adds a new link. Don't need to babysit, just want to be prepared to delete I don't know how often google spiders, but I never want them to stumble on an adult link!

can you still call your blog a blog if you no longer allowed comments?

i.e., only YOUR comments would be shown on the blog.
