There are more than a hundred buddhist temples in Chiang Mai, and they are considerably older than those in Bangkok.

This is the oldest, built in the 13th Century by King Mengrai to celebrate the founding of Chiang Mai city. It is reputed to contain a hair of Lord Buddha.

It's quite awe-inspiring.

Thanks everyone. This temple isn't very big but it really is breathtaking. I have about another 120 to explore as well.

Chris - I'm still in Chiang Mai - no plans to visit Bangkok in the near future. I'm flying to Kuala Lumpur at the end of the month to get a new Thai visa, but it's direct from Chiang Mai. Will definitely visit Bangkok at some point and hope to meet up with you.
