Can't pass up this opportunity: Way back in 1991 (maybe '92?) the magazine I worked for sent me to cover a convention in Phoenix. While there, they put me in touch via a 3rd party with the grandson of Oscar Mayer, and I got to spend an afternoon with him and interview him for the magazine.

He was a very nice, elderly gentleman, very gracious, and we had a great afternoon together. When I last saw him briefly at church that evening, he even managed to finagle a small package of wiener whistles for me to take back to the students I was teaching in a college news writing course at the time.

That was fun. (No, at no point in his career did he drive one of the wienermobiles. Always wished he had, though.)

I assume you wrote an article about him.

What was it about?

I remember seeing the Wienermobile at Knotts Berry Farm in Anaheim CA when I was a kid.

It was shaped more like a batmobile with a hot dog protruding from it..

Are we OLD if we have had the OM whistles???

I was working as news editor for the weekly church magazine of a Christian denomination and traveling for them at the time I did the story, along with a profile of one of their large congregations in the Phoenix area. (I won't name the denomination, but it is often abbreviated A/G or A of G.)

Anyway, the interview with (as I referred to him with my students) the Head Wiener Guy, dealt with his life-long religious "journey," and his testimonial of finding God after his young daughter was healed of a life-threatening disease. I don't even remember the details of his experience, this long since I met him.

He was a really nice guy, though. I never met his wife and daughter or any other family members.

When I was a child, I use to dream of being an Oscar Mayer Weiner.

Unfortunately, I grew up just being weiner that was full of bologna.
