Adsense Test on Backcountry.com Internal Search Results Pages

Hello everyone,

I wanted to let you all know that we have started another experiment with Adsense, but this time we are blocking Adsense from ~ever~ showing up when an affiliate cookie is set. This test started this morning on our internal search results pages for Backcountry.com only.

If you would like to perform a test to be sure your traffic is not getting exposed to Adsense, please follow these steps:

1. Clear your cookies (IE: Tools -> Internet Options.. -> Delete Cookies..; Mozilla: Tools -> Options -> Clear Cookies).

2. Once cookies are cleared go to Backcountry.com and type ‘north face tents’ in the search box. Adsense units may appear in the far right column (we actually have a control group for ads not showing with any traffic..FYI) because after clearing your cookies no affiliate PID is present as Reference #.

3. Now go to your affiliate site and click through a tracking link to Backcountry.com.

4. Look to see if your PID is in the upper right corner of the header as Reference #.

5. If your PID is present as the Reference #, do the same search again for ‘north face tents’. Since your cookie is now set you WILL NOT see the Adsense units.

I encourage you to take these steps to ease your concerns over leaks presenting themselves to your traffic.

The Backcountry.com internal search box is in the header below the backcountry.com logo on every page of our site.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Regards,

Gary M

I don't see them showing up on interior pages. Putting Adsense traffic diversion Ads to your competitors sites is not a sound move regardless. Your site gets enough BHO competitor popups to drain enough BCS shoppers. Those GSI sporting goods stores all pop-up from 50+ BHO's triggered on your page contextual keywords. Get a GoldenCan showcase product feed display and allow your affiliates to focus shoppers towards a specific product before the click. They then might ignor the BHO popups as they enter the forced cookie landmine zone.

Thanks for the feedback..

Hello ecomcity,

The Adsense will not show up on internal pages. Only on search results pages (ie, the ouput pages after a search that have URLs starting with search.backcountry.com/exec).

Also, if there is an affiliate cookie set; in other words, if your PID is the reference number in the upper right corner, the Adsense ads will never show up.

On the other hand,

If you clear your cookies then perform a search.. you may see the Adsense ad units on the results pages.

Thanks for your post. We value your opinions.

Uh huh. You value the opinions so much that you deleted every opinion proffered except one so far as I can see.

If you do not care for the value of people's insights and just want to make an announcement, you should lock the thread instead of deleting the remarks that are made regarding your announcement.

Hello SSanf,

I have not deleted a single post nor do I have the capability to do so.

You should email Haiko and let him know your post is missing.

I am pretty sure it was this thread and also, Gordon had a post if I am not mistaken.

I just felt it is better to lock a thread if the purpose is an announcement, only.

Well, maybe, the posts are elsewhere.

Yikes! My mistake. It was the other guy who did it.

This is all pretty confusing.

Sorry about that.
