Hate to see a game like last nights end in controversy. What an incredible performance by both bullpens, up until Hoffman got the ball. No matter if last play was called correctly or not, Hoffman had put hos own team on the ropes, and I'm not sure Colorado wouldn't have scored again in that inning... But I'll ask directly...
Was he safe or out?

Technically he was out. He never touched the plate so he wasn't safe. But I don't think he was ever tagged so he wasn't out until he left the basepath. Barrett made a great block, but he needed to immediately jump on Holliday and tag him. The umpire hesitated, and if Barrett acted like he was sure about Holliday mising the plate, the ump might have called him out. (Even more of a technicality - he might have been out when he was helped up by the trainer - there's a rule about a runner being allowed no assistance while on the basepaths.)

I'm not firmly convinced from the angles I saw that he didn't get a finger or two under Barret's cleat. And I think I've seen all the angles now...

I thought that after I saw a couple of replays and different angles, but then I saw one that seemed pretty clear that he didn't get get a finger underneath.

More importantly, were those the most boring announcers you've ever heard in your life? I didn't finish watching the game because they were putting me to sleep! Gave me a greater appreciation for Keith, Ron and Gary.

So no hockey or playoff baseball on ESPN.... Guess they will soon be skateboarding and poker around the clock?
![]() I'm not much of a Chip Carey fan either.

I've seen the replays too. He never touched to the plate and he wasn't tagged out. I think the ump had the worst view and was unsure himself. That's why the lackadaisical 'SAFE". I bet if Barrett had made a motion to tag Holliday after the slide past, the ump would have waited another moment or two for Barrett to tag him and called him out.
Another "historical moment" that will undoubtly be replayed for years to come. Just my opinion. Joey |

It's a shame that such a game for the ages had to end on such a play. I don't think he touched the plate. The bobbled ball certainly didn't help the ref's call...but he should have tagged the runner the moment he picked it up. By not doing so, he implies the baserunner touched the bag....
