Thread: Spammers on Blogs |

I am getting increasingly irritated with people who comment on my blogs with spam. I have the letter verification set up on my blogs, so for a comment to be placed, it has to be an actual human that picks one of my blogs from the hundreds that are out there, physically clicks one of my posts with the deliberate intention of posting spam - WTF? I put a lot into my blogs to make sure that they contain quality information for my readers, and it really feels like some stranger coming into my house and just taking a dump on my living room floor and not saying sorry for just leaving that there.
Someone just left this comment on my blog: WEBURL - Everything you need to know about Akon: cool hits, fresh news, videos, lyrics, biography, discography, wallapapers and much more The comment was made on a post about homeless people in the community I live in and how they tend to be disconnected from society because of the lack of access to a phone or ability to accept voice mails. The really ironic thing is that my post was a sponsored PayPerPost for discount calling cards - LOL If anyone is going to pimp out my blog, gosh darnit, it is going to be me - LOL

I have the same problem. I get several spam comments a day and they are almost always unrelated. Typically porn, gambling, and medicines. (no, I don't have any of those topics for websites )

Do you moderate the comments? I do. I have one spammer who comments on my blog every day trying to get a link to his web site. I hit the "reject comment" button and say "buh-bye."

Akismet still rules, though, and is invisible to the real users. |

I do moderate comments and I don't get anything close to 1700 a day
It is a blogger blog - does that software work on there, or does blogger just kind of take care of that for me?

Oh, my 1700 didn't come in one day LOL! It took a few months for that many to hit.
I'm not sure if it works on Blogger--it was originally developed for WordPress. (My blogs are WordPress, on my own domains). Akismet's site has a list of other implementations here http://akismet.com/development/ maybe one of them can be used... I'm not techie enough to do an adaptation, myself. |

I just set up Askimet on my wordpress sites. It found over one hundred spam comments on one of my sites that weren't even flagged by wordpress for review..

I coded my own blog and even get spam comments. But it only happens once [with certain keywords] and it never happens again once I flag the keyword(s). My spam has to be manually generated, the comment box is displayed with Javascript. So its either that or a smart bot that can read Javascript and generate the spam.
I always try to stay ahead; I was getting comments regarding Dodges, Cadillacs, so I went ahead and flagged all major car manufacturers (33 that I could think of). Haven't seen another auto-related spam yet, unless they want to get model specific then I won't.

Which blogging system eliminates and/or controls spam more efficiently?
Blogger, WordPress, or any other that should be mentioned? |

Akismet on Wordpress is excellent. I get maybe 200-300 spam comments a day, and perhaps 1 slips through that I have to delete before it gets moderated.

I've been noticing considerably fewer spam comments on my Wordpress blogs lately - and they're just using the basic Akismet spam blocker. Anyone else notice the drop in spam on Wordpress blogs lately? It was always good, but lately, barely any spam comments are getting through.

One of my blogs I kinda forgot about for months, when I checked it, it had something like 20K spam comments (no spam protection).
IE & Firefox would freeze up when I tried to delete them! Finally managed to delete them 500 at a time using Opera. |

lol 20k makes me feel a bit better. As a test for what you all go through trying to drive traffic, I made my wine blog do-follow. With a PR of 0 spam isn't a huge problem 5-10 per day usually(Askimet does wonders) but I did have about 60 coming back from Thanksgiving....I thought that was bad until reading this!
