Posted today by Ben, shows that Upromise not only effects affiliate links but is openly transmitting user data, including credit card information: http://www.benedelman.org/news/012110-1.html

Moderator Note: Split a couple posts out from a separate thread and merged these together - this is worthy of it's own thread!

Very few of the real crooks are in jail. I hope Ben's report wakes up the right people.

This is a cause that could (should?) be taken up by the Performance Marketing Association (performancemarketingassociation.com) to help ensure the integrity of our industry. A quote from the PMS site: "The PMA is dedicated to representing the interests of the performance marketing industry through government legislation and regulation, and shaping policies that impact online marketers."

UPromise is a paid Charter Gold Member of that organization. So, we'll see what, if anything, is said or done...

"Wakes up the right people?" More likely hit the snooze alarm.

Wow. I'd love to hear what the banks and credit card companies think of this. This can surely affect their bottom line by covering stolen credit card numbers.

it's the merchants that take the biggest hit on credit card fraud. the banks make money on it from 'charge back' fees to the merchant.

In this case the merchants in the program might have a problem with PCI compliance since thier business partner (Upromise) is sending/recieving the CC info which is probably also a violation of thier privacy polocies and they have a business relationship with the offender.

Michael, thanks for splitting out.

Can tell you from personal conversations that many of the OPM's from PMA actively promote all their merchants to Upromise. Doubtful that a vote of their members would pass that. If you look at the list of the top affiliates from the Top 3 networks Upromise will be in the Top 2.

Money and time would be better spent pushing this to the FTC/FCC.
